Results – Glenmarie (Valley Course) – 7th May 2019

With the start of Ramadan here in Malaysia we took advantage of the special Ramadan golf rates and played Glenmarie today at a bargain price of RM160. We had 4 flights and we played the Valley Course which was good for me as I had not played this course now for many years.

Weather conditons were excellent and the course was in great shape although the greens were running rather quickly which caught many players out.

After the game we had planned to have lunch at the club but due to some electrical problems they could do some limited food but unfortunately there was no beer so this was the deal breaker. Those staying for lunch therefore retired to the nearby La la Chong restaurant where multiple cold Carlsbergs were consumed along with some good food.

Results

Winner today was Iain Wise with a score of 97 for 34 points with Stan Constantides taking runner up position with 92 for 33 points. Best gross was Stuart Taylor with 91 and most gross was Roger McGowan with 123. Full scores below :

Results – Kota Seriemas Golf & Country Club – 30th April 2019

With the late entry of Jason Winter, we had 5 full flights for the end of April Trophy Game at Kota Seriemas Golf & Country Club. We had an early tee time of 7:30am and we got off on both 9’s at around 7:45am. Weather conditions were cool and overcast and with a sprinkling of rain during a few holes of our first 9 holes it was very cool and pleasant. The course conditions were good and with very few other players on the course, the first groups were finished at around 11:30am.

Lunch after the game was at our favourite East of Highway Restaurant which never fails to please. We had 3 birthday contributions to the kitty today so big thanks and Happy Birthday to Hans Berger, Ted Parslow, and Roger Surieux.

Results

We had a new winner today – having his first Loose Cannons win and for the April medal was Josef Winter with a score of 91 for 37 points.

Obituary – Ray Funnell

IMG_2590

It was with sadness and shock that we heard about the death of Ray Funnell yesterday on 26th April 2019 due to a heart attack. Ray (72) was a long-standing and active member of the Loose Cannons golfing group with a total of 476 games over his many years here in Malaysia.

Golf was his passion and his life and he managed the Loose Cannons group as Convenor for a number of years. Ray also participated in other golfing groups in KL including Loose Cannons, KLOGS, and WIGS and was an active participant in many of the charity golf tournaments in KL.

Ray was also an ardent KLOGGER who played with the KLOGS society for nearly 20 years. In these 20 years, he was twice KLOGGER of the year in 2007 and 2014 and also served on the KLOGS committee and attended several aways.

He will be sadly missed and remembered by his golfing friends from all of the golfing groups in Malaysia.

Condolences and our thoughts go out to Ray’s wife Gretta and the rest of his family at this time.

With 4 full flights we teed off on the first hole around 7:40am after the usual lengthy registration process. Weather was good and the course conditions were pretty good overall. Greens a little slow …. good excuse for the missed putts.

We were finished by 12:30pm then had a good lunch at O&S Restaurant closeby.

Results – Tasik Puteri – 16th April 2019

In the end seventeen starters, not an ideal numbers considering flight sizes, but that’s how it is some days.

Registration were done in a blink of an eye so we were off to play Putera and Tasik nines before booked time and as many times before the courses were in good shape.

After four hours plus in the sun it was nice to assemble at the Chin Heong Restoran Rawang for a cold beer and nice food.

Results

– winner Allan Wright with 42 points

– runner up Iain Wise with 40 points who just came back from England

– shared third on 39 points; Brian Stubbs, Andrew Robinson and Jan van Driel

– lowest gross Bernard Romahn, 84 strokes

Results – Impian Golf & Country Club – 9th April 2019

An enjoyable Loose Cannons golf day it was at Impian GCC today, weather a bit sticky at first however half-ways we had some cooling breeze. The course was in a good nick despite the heavy downpour yesterday afternoon, some bunkers were wet and soggy, but what to expect.

Yes it took some time, our flight had to wait for putting betting and one flight experienced a local flight having their morning tea break “on the green”

After the game more than half of the players assembled at Crab House Restaurant in Taman Kasturi, the good food were selected by Andrew

Results

Again Ricardo Castro took the prize money with 40 points, he also had the lowest gross with 82 strokes, excellent play Ricardo. He got so excited that he ordered ice-creams for all and two for himself. Shared second were; Mike Williams, Ted Parlslow, Enzo Filoni and Hans Berger with 35 points.

Results – Bukit Kemining – 2nd April 2019

Except for the walking members we were almost alone at Bkt Kemuning, both at the registration and on the course but after an hour or two it was quite few a players. .

Second nine was not ready to play so all four flights teed off from hole one. Course in good shape except for the sanded greens which was all of them. Weather a bit sticky at first however later we got a nice breeze, so overall a nice day out.

All except two came for the post game lunch at Restaurant New O&S Seafood, the food was very good as it usually is there, especially with a cold Tiger to it.

Results

Winner as many times before Tony Morris with 43 points, he had the lowest gross as well with 83. Second Allan Wright 38 and Martin Belderink third with 37 points.

Results – Staffield Country Resort – 26th March 2019

IMG_5094

There were 24 players this morning at Staffield Country Resort for the March Monthly Medal. After the usual slow registration, we got off on split tee boxes between the North and South courses. Weather was wonderful and the course was in good condition although there was much evidence of a large storm as many trees had been knocked down.

We had lunch after the game at the club along with the prize ceremony. With a couple of birthday donations from Aftab Ahmad and Jason Winter, we were in good shape so lunch was cheap for those who stayed.

Results – Amverton Cove – 19th March 2019

img_2555We had a minor bush-fire smoky surrounding at Amveron Cove. The course were in very good condition, but gee it was hot under the sun although the wind cooled us down a bit.

I have said before: this course is one of the best on LCs tour considering condition and money spent. All twelve assembled at the Chinese restaurant to the right just after the bridge, the beer was cold and the food ordered by Andrew was very good. All in all a nice day out with the LC’s.

Results

There were three people on 37points: Ricardo Castro, Hans Berger and Bernard Rohman, Ricardo won on a better second nine

Malacca Away – 12th-14th March 2019

Day 1 – Orna Golf & Country Club

The first day of Melaka Away 2019 is done and dusted. It was an ordinary Loose Cannons Tuesday game at Orna’s West and East nines. Quite a nice course actually, good layout but a bit dry though.

Mike Smith, LC’s founder looked forward to this but unfortunately he could not attend as his doctor gave him yesterday strictly instructions of; no golf, no car driving and no alcohol for 10-days. And of top of that Roger McGowan had a bad back despite consuming some German medicine on the way back to Kuala Lumpur.

So we ended up with two flights only.

Results

1) Martin Belderink hcp 23, 90/41

2) Bernard Romahn hcp 14, 82/40 which is lowest gross as well

3) Hans Berger hcp 30, 102/36

4) Ricardo Castro hcp 15, 90/33

5) Andrew Robinson hcp 30, 105/33

6) Jan van Driel hcp 26, 104/30

7) Joseph Winter no official LC hcp yet 97/29

8) Ray Funnell 33, 118/23

Day 2 – Ayer Keroh Country Club & Day 3 – Tiara Melaka Golf & Country Club

After a night out on the town, well it was mainly limited to Restaurant Curly Tails lovely food, day two of the Melaka Away 2019 awaited us at Ayer Keroh Golf Club Berhard, it is perhaps the most scenic of the three courses in Melaka

We started with Governor nine and ended with Ghafar, 6070 meters long from white. Like we experienced from Orna, the courses were dry so we got some bounces and extra meters. Governor nine was perhaps the better of them.

The last couple of years having a beer or two for lunch in their restaurant has been complicated, but after last years election beers are now available again and with the food coupons we received we had our lunch there of course.

Back to the hotel, we others had a rest whereas Ricardo was looking for a place to replace the putter shaft. Before heading off for last nights dinner and activities we assembled at our hotel Ramada Plaza bar for a few beers, buy one get one, was a good deal. Walking through Melaka at sunset along the river is very nice and you will see new restaurants open here and there since last year. I was looking for my very old place “Honky Tonk Heaven” but John the Kiwi owner and a very good piano player, had closed some years ago and left. Instead of the 21st floor sky restaurant we went for Bistro Year 1673 at Jonker Street. We have spent many Melaka Aways there and have good memories like when Geoff Parslow entertained us singing. Food was as usual very good, splitting the bill i.e. Going Dutch did not workout or was voted down by the wine drinkers I suppose so one could hear some noisy guests, but I think that is forgotten now.

Thursday the 14th of March the last day of Melaka Away 2019 arrived and rumors was saying that one guy had left the hotel very early for putting lessons. Our requests for caddies was delivered as asked for, very good as one cannot drive on the fairways. Quite a few complained about Tiara Melaka’s Meadow nine, I thought it was better than the Woodland nine. Overall all courses we have played suffered from lack of rain and poorly raked bunkers.

We had a good prize table, four bottles of wine, several boxes of golf balls, golf caps and some home made spicy stuff by Andrew Robinson Inc

The last day starting leader-board looked very different after all was done and dusted,

Wednesday and Thursday result you can see in the tables below.

Screenshot 2019-03-15 at 5.56.33 PM.jpg
