Results – KGSAAS – 31st October 2017

The Monthly Trophy game for October was held at KGSAAS with 20 players entered. We all got off on the Sultan and Alam Shah nines at around 8:00am and after some very heavy early morning rain in KL it was cool and overcast making it very pleasant to play.

We welcomed first time guest Bert Beekes (guest of Eric Van Donselaar) who joined us this morning.

Our 3rd flight off Sultan were held up briefly as Julien Hodson-Walker was not allowed to play in his cargo shorts and had to quickly return to the pro shop to purchase some acceptable golf shorts. He returned in some lurid pink shorts so along with Sigi in his brilliant shiny green (boxing) shorts made for a colourful flight indeed!

The course was in good condition although greens were somewhat erratic; some ok and some quite slow. It was good to see some ongoing maintanance around the course with some serious tree felling operations which made the course look tidier.

Results

The winner of the October Monthly Trophy was Ray Funnell with 100 for 38 with Bernard Romahn and Sigi Maierbrugger in tied second place on 36 points. Best gross was Geoff McLaws with an 84. Full results below:

Results – Bangi Golf Resort – 24th Oct 2017

IMG_5961There were 23 players today at Bangi Golf Resort and after a quick registration we were off at 8:00am from 2 tee boxes on the Kajang and Putrajaya nines. Already by early morning the sun was out and it was soon very warm and humid. We did however get some respite later when we had a 10 minute rain shower.

The course was in reasonable condition and playing from the blue tees this time most players found this much more enjoyable.

Welcome to our new guest who joined us today – Alan Feasby invited by David Savage.

After the game we had lunch at our favourite East of Highway Restaurant.

Results

Our winner this week with a very good 96 for 40 points was Allan Wright. We had two players tied for 2nd place; Martin Belderink with 92 for 38 and David Savage with 87 for 38. Best gross was shared between Mike Williams and Paul Geddes, both with 85 and most golf was won by Brian Stubbs with a 115, although it must be said that our Convenor, Hans Berger did not finish because of injury …. so perhaps he may have had most golf!! Results – Nilai Springs – 17th Oct 2017

IMG_5869

There were 12 players confirmed for today’s game at Nilai Springs but due to a last minute pull out we only had 11.

We played the Mango and Island 9’s and made good time with no holdups all the way round. On the first 9 holes (Mango) the greens had not been cut and were very slow …. but the back 9 (Island) the greens were much much faster causing a big change in putting tactics for everyone.

Weather was good and we were all finished by just after 12 noon. Lunch was at the clubhouse verandah. We had to send back the initial two jugs of beer which were mildly cold … and exchanged these for some nice cold Carlsberg bottles on ice. Luckily these were taken off the bill.

Batam Away – 10th-13th October, 2017

First day before tee-off at Terring Bay-1

Eight of the ordinary LC’s went to Batam this week to play Palm Springs, Terring Bay and Batam Hills and the good part flying away, it’s just a short convenient trip with Malindo Air from Subang Airport.

Our first stop was at Palm Springs which was like a homecoming for me as I used to be member there when I was living in S’pore. They have added New Resort Course since I left so they operate 36-holes now, it’s a nice place and highly recommended but very busy over the weekend. The course can handle a heavy downpour well as it’s built on sand. See report issued for results.

Wednesday being the first day of the two day Batam Competition we played Terring Bay, also familjiar to me from my S’pore times. It has some very nice holes along the sea. One could sort of notice that the business is not as good as it used to be.

The final day we played Battam Hills a new experience for me. A very nice club house with Egypt decorations on the walls and nicely manicured plants along the fairways. It has a few challenging narrow fairways holes combined with wide opened. The last two courses are also very nice to play but cannot handle water as good as Palm Springs.

We stayed downtown Nagoya at Hotel – Harmoni Batam conveniently located next to Masale Village, a very good place for a few nights.

Batam and specially Nagoya has developed nicely over the years, it’s a lot more traffic though, the main roads are good and the always present motorcycles are well behaved compare to what we are used to.

Results

As I suspected with the form Bernard has shown lately he won with 36/40 = 76 points, followed by Ted 34/37 = 71 and Martin Walsh 37/32 = 69. It goes to show that one need a lower handicap to be competitive over two days or more.

Correction …… Glen Wombwell’s score at Tering Bay on 11th October should be 105 for 35 points ….. and Ray Funnell’s score at Batam Hills on 12th October should be 117 for 21 points. This has been corrected in the master spreadsheet and the handicap records.

We had an incident/discussion the first day about Preferred Lie, we all know about that rule “closely mown area through the green” but this happen to be on another hole then we played on. My judgement then was that it’s based on the type/condition of the grass that counts, not on which fairway you are.

It was a very nice trip and I especially thank Bernard for volunteer for ‘money bag man’ it helped easing the task.

Results – Palm Springs GCC, Batam – 10th October 2017

On our first day on Batam we played Palm Springs GCC Resort and Palm nines. A bit unlucky as it started to rain cats and dogs when we arrived from the airport. We were in doubt that we actually could play but after about two hours we begin to see Singapore on the other side so we went out.
Despite all the water that came down the fairways were in good condition some bunkers were damaged though. We just managed to finish it before it became too dark.
We all enjoyed Palm Springs GCC and they have two more nines to play.

Results – Monterez Golf & Country Club – 10th October 2017

IMG_5699

While the Batam Away group were heading off for 3 days of golf in Indonesia the stragglers arranged a game here in KL. Registration this morning at Monterez was easy and was helped financially by a very good deal if using Maybank or CIMB debit cards where we could get a rate of RM68 per player for that flight. Thanks to Allan Wright and Stan Constantinides we got cheap rates for 2 flights. Normal rates were RM106 so all in all a good deal.

As expected Monterez was quite moist given the recent rain and its tendancy to get wet easily. However apart from a few plugged balls on the fairways the course was generally in good shape and the greens very good. The slopes on the greens and the pin positions however made it quite tricky. Weather was good but did get a bit hot near the end of the round.

We had an excellent lunch after the game at the nearby Choong Foong Seafood Restaurant and lunch was well washed down by many cold beers kindly aided by a kind RM200 input from Paul Geddes for a recent birthday. Happy Birthday Paul!

Results – KGSAAS – 3rd October 2017

IMG_5622

We played at KGSAAS today on the President and Sultan 9’s. Course was in fairly good shape although the fairways seem to need some attention with cow grass growing through and what looked like tiny daisies growing on the 9th hole of the President 9. They have been cutting back the trees and the rough quite extensivle so the course looks very tidy now. Weather was also great and we got round in good time by around 12:30pm with lunch taken at the club.

Welcome to our guest today … Niall Murray … introduced by Emlyn Jones.
