STAFFIELD REPORT-31-10-2023

Cannon’s

Today we played with good success Staffield again. In spite of the rain in the last few days/weeks, the course was in good condition. Some places were a bit soggy, but not too much. We were allowed to drive on the fairways so that was good. The greens were hard and in very good condition.

We teed off nice and early at 7.30 to beat the crowd of a tournament that morning. A very good experience, worthwhile to repeat as it gives a bit more rest in the game, and lunch can start relatively early and be more relaxed. Lunch as usual was at the club itself.

We played the Western and Southern courses with very good results for some of us.

We had three players who played better than their handicap. In third place, was Ricardo with a total of 38 points. Second was again Iain, who has been scoring very well the last couple of weeks, with 41 points. However, the first place with an enormous amount of points, more than I ever have seen, is our own Markus. He exploded and scored a total of 49 points. Rightfully he said about himself that that is called in Dutch, a “dual-boot” (submarine). Markus, well done, and obviously, your handicap went down by 2 points!

This was the last game of myself as convener for the Loose Cannons. I wish you all a good couple of months. I will be back in March next year.

JB AWAY GAMES REPORT (SENIBONG & PALM RESORT)-25 & 26-10-2023.

Gents,

For the following three days, we decided to form teams of two players, who would play a competition next to the normal individual competition. The teams were: “The Royal Balls” – Ricardo/Frans; “The Booze Cannons” – Josef/Diederik; “TOGAS” – Bernard/David; “The Hackers” – Jan/Fritz.

On Tuesday we had our regular game at Forest City. We played the Classic Course, and that was a splendid experience. Playing on a carpet, even the tees were immaculately green. That was certainly a delight. It is not an easy course, with water and a lot of bunkers around. The weather turned very hot, and in particular, it affected the second nine for a few of us. Good scoring however, with David and Ricardo sharing the third place with 32 points, Josef in second with 33 points, and Bernard, the winner with 35 points! Monday evening we were with the full 8 players and decided to have dinner at the waterfront opposite the Berjaya Hotel. And that was a mistake. We didn’t know that a new owner just took over three days before, and that was very noticeable. The beer wasn’t really beer, but resembled another yellowish liquid, and tasted very bad. So we will certainly remember that.

Wednesday we started with the first game of the two-day competition. We played at Senibong, a great course, with a lot of water on the course, but that didn’t distract us too much. Interesting there is that the first hole is a very intimidating hole over the water, dog left right, and again over the water. Because the course was relatively short, we played off the blue tees there.

Josef came in third here with 32 points, Bernard followed in second with 34 points and Ricardo had a great day with 39 points!

After the first two days, TOGAs was first with 127 points, Royal Balls second with 124 points, The Booze Cannons third with 122 points and The Hackers hacked around the courses with 91 points

On the last day, we played the Cempaka course at Palm Resort. Again great weather, luckily a bit of a breeze, because in some places it became very hot! The only disappointment there was that the greens were treated just the week before and became very slow and irregular.

The scoring was good however with Bernard winning with 33 points, Ricardo followed with 31 points and Josef was third with 29 points.

This all ended up with the Royal Balls winning with 183 points, just beating TOGAS with 1 point (182), The Booze Cannons ending third with 178 points and The Hackers finishing with 128 points.

For the individual standings, Ricardo finished as winner with 70 points. He received the special shirt and an LC cap. Bernard was second good for a bottle of wine, Josef third with an MST voucher, Diederik was 4th with an LC cap,  Frand was 5th with a Pampas food voucher, Jan was 6th with a Pampas wine voucher, a sleeve of balls was for David and Fritz received a towel.

The count of total birdies was a very simple one. Only one birdie was scored by Bernard, good for an MST voucher.

After a good lunch at the club, we left around 2 p.m. for our trips back home.

FOREST CITY REPORT(CLASSIC)-24-10-2023

Cannon’s

A group of 6 players played on Monday a fun game at the Orchard Golf Club. A club where you don’t make a booking, just walk in and play. We played with two 3-balls and had indeed fun. The course was good, greens and fairways were well maintained, so it was worthwhile playing there. Not too expensive either!

KRTU REPORT-17-10-2023

Cannon’s

It was a pleasure to play again KRTU. The course was in good condition with well-maintained greens but very slow and tricky, and cost a lot of strokes to everyone. Six of us were the first time playing at KRTU and in the end, we had good reviews from them. Thank you Zak Zainal for your help in making the bookings and getting a good deal for us and we offer him an LC Cap and a sleeve of balls as a recognition for his efforts and support. We welcomed Frigg Steinmann for his second game with us and I heard he had a great golf experience. The winner today was (again!!) Iain Wise with 100 for 34 points followed by Ricardo Castro with 85 (lowest gross) for 32 points and in third place Josef Winter with 94 for 31 points. After the game, we had a good lunch at the terrace with a good beer promotion, and all happy. With these results the year competition saw Iain Wise jump to first place with a comfortable 73 points, followed by Josef Winter with 78 and David Cheung with 67, but with 2 games to go all still open and we will see some changes. Next week we will be in JB (2 full flights) for our annual way games with the regular game to be held at Forest City Classic course, the first away game at Senibong, and the second away game at Palm Resort, Cempaka course.

Cheers

Ricardo

IMPIAN REPORT-10-10-2023

Cannon’s,

Three full flights teed off from hole one at Impian before 8:00 am and we all finished before noon. The course is always in good condition with nice greens. The weather was hot and humid. The winner today was Iain Wise with a nice 96 for 39 points, beating Fritz Katzengruber OCB by 1 point difference on the back nine, and in third place was Josef Winter with a reasonable 90 for 36 points. Bernhard only played nine holes and had to rush to buy the cake for his wife’s birthday, it seems love is still in the air…With these results for the October competition, Josef is now leading with 68 points, second by David Cheung with 67, and Iain with 66, so all are open for the last three games including the JB away game. We had a fantastic lunch at Kajang Fei Chuai Restaurant, fully sponsored by WL Chia to celebrate his 60th Birthday with special dishes and cool beers. Chia got a special Portuguese bottle of red wine as a birthday gift, and thank you again Chia for organizing such a feast and supporting our society, really very nice of you. This is the true spirit of Loose Cannons and let us keep this spirit always alive and strong. We all wish you a happy year full of happiness and good health.

Cheers

Ricardo

SERI SELANGOR REPORT-03-10-2023

Cannon’s,

We teed off at 8:00am with three full flights! It was very busy at the clubhouse, not with golfers but with a sort of conference going on with all the people in nice black suits with ties and so on. Not for us, we came to play golf in nice weather, sometimes a bit warm, but we didn’t see too much of the have which has come over West Malaysia. The course was in a variable condition, the fairways were not always that nicely cut, and some of the greens were sandy, especially the green on hole # 10 was in a very bad shape with machine marks but nevertheless fast.

So, all in all, a very good morning to play golf.

As usual, we had our lunch in the Beer Factory, where we welcomed Andrew Robinson!! Having had various (nine in total) eye operations, it was good that he joined us again for lunch.

We also welcomed Andy Morrow, haven’t seen him for quite a while, but it seems that he now has some more time to play with us. The last time he played with the Loose Cannons was in December 2021, also at Seri Selangor!!

During lunch, with a lot of beers (30 in total), and pizzas (long waiting times) we celebrated the scores: Ricardo was third with 33 points, Andy was second with 35 points, and Bernard was best of all with 36 points. Congratulations Bernard!

The September champion was Ricardo, who received the prize for being the best last month!

Last but not least we congratulated Iain on his birthday today. As he gave us a generous gift for the kitty, the lunch was still bearable in price. Thanks, Iain and enjoy!

Next week we will play at Impian.
