A brief history of Kuala Lumpur Loose Cannons
After retiring I opened a Bar & Restaurant called Flagz in Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur, in late 1999. Amongst my customers were a few golfers (I use the term golfer in its broadest possible sense) and we started playing together on a Tuesday morning followed by lunch washed down with a lot of amber nectar. The original group comprised myself, Andrew Robinson, Klaus Kretzschmar and Richard Moss. This group quickly grew to include Ian Geekie, Iain Wise (when on R&R visits), Raymond Keys, Roger Smith (deceased), Rikki Ingham, Yoong, Tony Morris and Paul Hobbs. In 2002 Flagz held its first Golf Day, won by Roger Smith. In those early days the group called itself Flagz Loose Cannons and in January 2004 we started to keep records and a proper handicapping system and the group continued to grow with 3 to 5 flights gathering every Tuesday morning at various courses in and around KL. The winner of the last game of the month won a handsome trophy.
In the early days, there were 57 courses within one hours drive of Bangsar to choose from. Sadly several of these have since closed. Loose Cannons was mostly made up of retirees and few blokes without proper jobs; guys with varying backgrounds and from every corner of the world. In 2005 we held our first Away trip; this one to Malacca, where we stayed at the Renaissance and famously drank to Club Bar dry. This was before dinner!!! Away’s became twice-yearly events; generally to Malacca and Ipoh, but also to Batam and most recently to Johor Bahru.
After the sale of Flagz in May 2007 the name was changed to Kuala Lumpur Loose Cannons and membership continued to grow and thrive with about 80 registered members. Members spanned the complete golfing skill spectrum from a retired touring pro, a few single figure handicappers, all the way up to those who struggled to break 120. But it was and is a great group of guys.
