After a very rainy night and a drizzly start to the day 23 players tee’d off on the Staffield North and South 9’s at 8:00am for our monthly trophy game. The course even after all the rain was good and at least the rain kept it very cool for most of the morning. We all got round in reasonable time and took lunch at the club after the game. One Tip of the Day is to order local dishes for lunch …. our fish and chips took more than 45 mins!!

Results

The winner of the March Monthly Trophy was Martin Walsh with a score of 83 for 39 points just beating Andrew Cseszko on countback. We had 3 players in 3rd place – Ricardo Castro, Kevin Wiggins and Roger McGowan all on 37 points. Best gross of the day was Andrew Cseszko with his excellent 76. Full scores listed below.

Results – Staffield – 30th January 2018

When we played this course in November last year I was told when registering next time we need to bring proof of age to get the benefits of seniors green fee. I called them Monday but no change of process. Oh boy, what a registration process one had to go through as they checked our proof of age for validity, three Malaysian driving licenses were not valid as it had no birthday date…no birthday date…. and a number of others needed clarification of which of the numbers is the birthday of the holder. Then they were all copied and after that the actual registration commenced.

By the time it was finished, a line of six-seven others were waiting behind me for the same process. And in the meantime two minibuses of Koreans had arrived and occupied the first tee-box of the Western nine which was allotted to our last three flights. One don’t take a fight with a stern looking Korean so eventually the club opened the Northern nine for us, but in hindsight it should have remained closed.

So much for booking well in advance, I need to find a better way of fixing this, group booking is perhaps the answer.

I have never experienced the course as wet and soggy before with lack of maintenance in certain areas which I think explain the high gross scores in many cases. But the weather was very nice, a bit hot though.

As many times before we had the lunch at the club with 19 of the 24 players attending. Yeah the food could be a bit better but with so many eating on the way home it’s not really working well as it will drag out forever until one can order the food.

So did we have any really good scores, yes three of twenty-four beat the course and they were:

Winner on count back Paul Collett with 91/39 who is the first winner of this month’s trophy from Royal Selangor

Runner up, Ricardo Castro with 83/39

Third and lowest gross Andrew Cseszko with 78/37

Paul Collet, January 2018 Champion
When I left the course, a flock of cows were grazing just outside going right. Being an old farmer boy I had to make a u-turn to take a few pictures and having a chat, I like cows.

An eventful and memorable day – Hans

The monthly medal for November was held at Staffield Country Resort with a total of 28 players attending. We all got off smoothly on the North and South nines at 8:00am. Weather was overcast and cool making it a pleasant morning and with the usual good course conditions was a joy to play.

We had lunch at the club post game which was good but the beer a tad on the expensive side.

The winner of the November Trophy was Geoff McLaws with a score of 77 for 38 points on countback from Siegmund Maeirbrugger who had 89 for 38 points.

This is a corrected results after reviewing the handicaps and finding that an incorrect handicap of 25 had been used initially for ReinLi Tan when he was declared the winner after the game. His handicap should have been 23.

I managed to contact Geoff McLaws to tell him the changed result and as chance would have it he was having a drink with ReinLi so they managed to do a handover of the trophy from ReinLi to Geoff. ReinLi told me he had alread spent the RM50 on beer. The pictures below tells all!!

Results – Staffield Golf & Country Resort – 2 May 2017

Buggie parking

All arrived in time including myself, registration takes it’s time here due to all +55 proof of age need to be manually recorded.

Flight 1-3 played Western and flight 4-5 the Southern nine and perhaps we should have all played Western as those who teed off before flight 4-5 were very very slow.

Staffield Country Resort does seldom let the players down, same today but looking at the scores it was not as easy as we have been used to, perhaps mainly due to all the rain.

Martin Belderink took the price-money today with 99/37, closely followed by Kevin Wiggins 90/36 and just one point after him came David Evans 99/35.

Lowest Gross should be some with lower Hcp, today it was Paul Geddes with 86 and most played had Kaz Takita with 108 and not far behind followed by Roger and me on 104.

Today no fancy expensive food as we had the lunch at the club and the food was okay but the Carlsberg draft beer had some ‘non-Carlsberg’ taste and after addressing the issue we got a couple of jugs free and better tasting beer.

Lately we have had quite a lot of contributions due to birthday or a high number of games played, today Ted and myself through in 200Rm each as we had our birthday end of April, so filling the hat was not too expensive.

Results – Staffield – 24th January 2017

What to say? Rain rain go away, give us a break and let us play.

With Barry dropping out overnight….. having suddenly remembered that he had a hospital appointment…..senior moment….23 Cannons pitched up at Staffield in drizzle after almost continuous overnight rain. The prospects did not look good. But in true LC’s tradition the intrepid assembly took to the Western & Northern 9’s promptly at 8 o’clock. Surprisingly, carts were allowed on the fairways and play got underway and continued through continuous rain varying from light drizzle to steady rain for the first 6 or 7 holes. At this point it was pissing it down and we were restricted to carts on paths. But by the 8th the greens were flooded and the siren sounded to stop play. There then followed one and a half hours of hanging about during which several players had had enough and departed. But the rain eased……didn’t stop….and the all clear siren finally sounded and out we went again. In the interval the pro-shop had done a roaring trade with new shirts so for them at least, the morning was a success.

The rain continued unabated for the remainder of the round and the 17 survivors finally completed their round at about 2pm. 11 or 12 stayed for lunch.

Staffield it has to be said, played very well in spite of the very wet conditions; a testimony to the excellent drainage of this course. The greens especially were true and fast and maintained their condition throughout.

The winner and the only player to match his handicap was Mike Williams with 86 for 36 points ahead of Iain Wise with 96 for 35. 2 players shared third spot. Martin Belderink and Paul Geddes with 34 points apiece.

We don’t have a COTD award…..perhaps we should…..but if we did it would certainly have gone to Paul Geddes who thought someone had stolen his clubs before the start of play and had to play with hired clubs. However, on checking during the interruption, he found his clubs were still at the car wash where he left them the day before!!!! WTF.

In nearly 40 years of playing golf in Malaysia this was the first time I have played a complete round in continuous rain.

Golf next Tuesday will be the January Trophy Game at the driest course we play, Tasik Puteri. Names to me soonest please.

Now I have to clean and oil my clubs.

Results – Staffield Country Resort- 22nd November 2016

We had 7 full flights today at Staffield Country Resort indicating clearly the popularity of this course that always seems in great condition. It’s a bit of a trek … but … hey what the heck else do we have to do all day.

Welcome to our guest today, Alain Desiderato, who joined us for the first time.

We tee’d off from two tee boxes on Western and Southern nines after an easy registration and with hardly anyone lese on the course we had a clear run. The course as usual was in great shape. The greens on the Western nine were fast whereas the greens on the Southern nine were considerably slower and a little bumpy …. looks like they had recently been hollow tined.

Our flight were a bit worried when we reached the first green … and thought someone from the 1st flight had perhaps left their brain behind at the side of the green …..

img_1072

…… a beautiful “brain-shaped” mushroom.

The weather was good and with a brief threat of rain we all got back to the clubhouse by around 12:30 and had lunch at the club just before the heavens opened.

Results
