Results – Staffield Country Resort – 29th January 2019

With 5 full flights and a promised early tee time of 7:30am we knew when we arrived at Staffield this was going to be a problem. It was busy with many walkers already getting ready and heading to the tee box as well as a large groups of other players. So after a tedious registration it was after 8:00am till we got started with all our flights teeing off from the Southern Nine then crossing over to the Northern Nine.

However once we got started it was plain sailing and the course and weather conditions were excellent. After the game we had lunch at the club and Hans Berger made the presentation for the January Monthly Medal winner and for 2019 we now do indeed get a medal for this and not a trophy as in previous years.

Bukit Unggul Country Club – 22nd January 2019

img_4227

We had 14 players today at Bukit Unggul for an early start at 7:15am to get off before a large Korean contingent. We welcomed back David Hughes who played at the start of his routine once a year visit to Malaysia. We teed off from two tee boxes at 7:15am sharp under the gloomy dawn light. The course was predictably poor with quiet a number of the fairways in very bad shape due to wild boar damage. Many of us remembered the last time we played here and said that would be the last time …. when will we learn.

After the game 12 of us took lunch at East of Highway Restaurant and the coffers were boosted by a RM200 Birthday donation from Stuart Taylor and a 100 game celebration donation of RM100 from Ricardo Castro.

The winner today with a great score of 86 for 40 points was Kevin Wiggins beating Erol Akinci in 2nd place on 94 for 39 points. Best gross of the day was Martin Walsh with an 84 (should have been an 83 after 3-putting the last!!) Full scores below:

Results – Kota Seriemas Golf & Country Club – 15th January 2019

img_407615 Loose Cannons players played at Kota Seriemas Golf and Country Club today with a sharp tee off at 7:30am all from tee box no. 1. The course was in fine condition and the pace was good on the front 9 but by the time we did the turn we had a jumbo flight group of 5 players in front who held us up for a number of holes till they let us play through.

Lunch after the game was at East of Highway Restaurant and Tont Morris kindly threw in RM300 to the pot to celebrate his birthday this Thursday … thanks Tony!

Results – Tasik Puteri – 8th January 2019

img_3731After a quick registration we were able to start by 0745 with flights split between Putera and Puteri nines. The course was in good condition with cool cloudy weather making for a very pleasant start, although the Puteri greens were much slower than Putera.

There were few other players on the course so the three ball flight, lead by Tony Morris, were able to finish by 1130, but then missed lunch as the restaurant was still closed. Lunch at Restoran Chin Hiong which was very good and reasonably priced.

Results – Amverton Cove – 2nd January 2019

img_3313

A total of 14 Cannons pitched up at Amverton Cove on 2nd January for the first game of 2019.  Registration was straight forward and we even got a little extra discount for seniors, which was not expected.  So a good start to the day!
A heavy overnight downpour had left the course quite soggy so we had to have buggy on track for the first 9, moving onto the course for the 2nd 9.  We teed off just before 8am from 2 tee boxes with 2 x 3-balls and 2 x 4-balls, and crucially in front of a visiting group of Koreans.  All flights were finished in less than four and a half hours by about 12:15, which is a good pace of play for 4-balls — this should be our target game time.
Today was the first Cannons game using the new 2019 rules – and Roger took advantage of that with a double hit at one of the par 4s.  Searching for a lost ball is now reduced to 3 minutes maximum, but this did not seem to be a problem today.
Overall the course was in good condition with a few squelchy areas due to recent rain, however the greens were super fast which caused some anguish and expletives for most players.
Winner on the day with 39 points and an excellent gross of 83 was Bernard Romahn – the only player to beat his handicap, and he was duly awarded the RM 50 winners prize.  Well done for an excellent round Bernard!  Joint 2nd were Kevin Wiggins and Brian Stubbs with 34 points – who got nout for being 2nd.  Lowest gross of the day was a joint effort of 83 from both Bernard and Jason Winter – well done guys!   We were delighted to welcome back Hans for a trial run of his recovered injuries – but unfortunately that did not work out so well and it’s back to the drawing board for a few weeks — hope it gets sorted soon Hans.
The apres-golf lunch was planned for the Chinese restaurant just across the bridge – however the early finishers found it was closed and made a hastily convened executive decision to relocate to the Selangor Club Kiara Annex.  After various calls and texts and WhatsApp messages, 9 Cannons ended up at the Annex.  Unconfirmed reports came in that Ted and Jason had made their own executive decision to eat at the first available restaurant near the bridge and regrettably they did not join us at the Annex.  Sigi, Johan and Ray already had other plans.
Andrew hosted the lunch with his members card and an enjoyable time was had by all.  Apart from Stan, who was waiting for his Calzoni style pizza for ages and ages — until he realised he had mis-read the menu and it was not available.  Brian Stubbs contributed some beer money on the occasion of his 150th cannons game.  There was a surplus in the cash collected so RM 300 was handed to Hans for 2019 trophys etc and there was no need of a collection for the lunch cost.  The princely sum of RM 77 was left in the kitty and was handed to Roger for next week at Tasik Puteri – look out for Roger’s emails regarding arrangements.
Cheers and Happy New Year!
