Results – Malacca Tour – 25th – 27th March 2014

Loose Cannons had a very successful 3 day away tour to Malacca from 25-27 March playing at Orna, Tiara Melaka and Ayer Keroh. The Bayview Hotel was used as a base as we did last year. A brief report and photos for each day are included below.
Day 1 – Orna Golf Club

The monthly trophy game was held at Orna Golf Club with conditions hot, dry and windy. Fairways were very dry and hard but the greens were good albeit very tricky. We had 20 players on the day, including Geoff McLaws who came down for the day for the monthly trophy game.
The winner of the day was Andrew Robinson with a great score of 92 for 39 points. Geoff McLaws came 2nd with 80 (lowest gross of the day) for 36 points.

Day 2 – Tiara Melaka Golf Club

Following the monthly trophy game we then had a 2 day competition starting with Tiara Melaka on the first day. The course was in very good shape and well watered in the current dry conditions with good greens albeit a little slow. The weather was very hot requiring players to take on plenty of fluids to make it sound the 18 holes.
Winner of the day was Ted Parslow with 82 for 37 points and second was David Hughes with 86 for 35 points.

Tour Dinner – Bistro 1637 – Jonkers Street

We had a group dinner on the Wednesday evening at Bistro 1637, which turned out to be expensive with a poor selection and quantity of food. However the group did have a good evening helped no doubt by plentiful refreshments and ended up singing along with the local band to round off the evening.

Day 3 – Ayer Keroh Golf Club

The last day of the four was at Ayer Keroh Golf Club – a tough and long course so with an even hotter day and with many players nursing a hangover it was a challenge. Martin Walsh managed to come down and join us for this game so making up a full 5 flight complement of 20 players. We had 3 players who did not finish on the day due to the arduous conditions. he course was fairly green compared to the dry courses of the previous 2 days and again greens were excellent but very tricky.
Winner of the day was Geoff Parslow with 81 points for 35 points and second was Hans Berger with 95 for 34 points.

The 2 day competition was won by Geoff Parslow on count back with a total of 65 points and Stuart Taylor came second also with 65 points. David Hughes was third with a total of 62 points.
There was a large number of prizes for various positions which were presented in the clubhouse following the game.

Results – Kota Permai – 18th March 2014

Report
Kota Permai was in excellent condition as 23 Loose Cannons players descended on the lush, green fairways. We had 6 flights and we managed to tee off at around or shortly after 7:30 from 2 tee boxes as planned.
The fairways were in excellent shape as were all the bunkers and the greens ran true and fast as they normally do at this wonderful course.
The winner today was Kevin Wiggins with a great score of 83 for 40 points – well done Kevin. Joint runners up were Geoff McClaws (78 for 38 points) and Robert Mulliss with 100 for 38 points. Geoff McClaws also had the best gross of the day.
Lunch was held at the New Fu Yen Restaurant which was very good and aided by kind donations from Ray Funnell and Kevin Wiggins who celebrated their recent 300th and 200th games respectively. Thank you both for the kind donations. Tony Morris was presented at lunch with the January Trophy which was not available at the time he won it – please see photo of Tony and the January Trophy below in the Photo section.
Thanks also to Barry Cousins who made the booking at Kota Permai.
One amusing incident of the day transpired with an apparent “golf buggy accident” with our 4-ball group including Bernhard Romahn, Bernie Schobert, Vincent Vijayan and Iain Wise. The buggy in question, which sustained some damage, was of course commandered by our very own “Desert Fox” Bernhard Romahn, known well for his previous exploits of buggy driving skills and through-bunker-navigation. This has inspired an immediate release of a new movie to follow up from the previous Desert Fox poster which was popularly received by Herr Romahn as detailed below for your viewing pleasure.

Results – Tasik Puteri – 11th March 2014

Report

What we thought initially was the dreaded haze as we arrived at Tasik Puteri was just early morning mist which soon burned off leaving us to a beautiful day on the course with bright blue clear skies. The course was in pretty good shape although very dry in places. The greens were deadly – dry and fast so those with slopes and undulations were most tricky.
With 5 flights and 18 players we all got off without any fuss and were all back at the clubhouse in good time. There were some good scores posted today – the winner Stuart Taylor with 85 for 39 points and in shared 2nd place was Richard Moss with 107 for 37 points and Glen Wombwell with 100 for 37 points. It must again be noted that players are not calculating their Stableford points correctly and at least 3 or 4 players had to have their score adjusted after the cross check and one player even stated an incorrect handicap on their card …. every player should know their correct handicap before the start of the round … if you can’t remember ask the Convenor or the Handicap Manager.
We had an excellent lunch at the usual Chinese restaurant close to the club – well ordered Glenn Wombwell! …. and Robert Mulliss kindly sponsored the drinks to celebrate his birthday – Thank You Robert! We all said our farewells to Keith Wiggins (Kevin’s brother) who has been joining us for the past few weeks – he is returning shortly back to UK.
Also noted that this was Ray Funnell’s 300th game and Kevin Wiggins’ 201st game today ….. we all look forward to some celebratory refreshments next week!

Results – Port Klang Golf Resort – 4th March 2014

Report

After playing round Port Klang golf course today I am at a loss as to how this course can refer to itself as a “Golf Resort”. It is by far the worst course we have played on during my time with Loose Cannons and between myself and my partners we could not find one redeeming feature about this course. There is obviously no money being spent at all on routine maintenance …. the tees were so bad it would have been better to tee up in the rough, the fairways were full of ruts and had patches of severe rough growing out of the “fairway” …… and the greens were abysmal – mossy, spongy, SLOW, eroded, uncut, uneven … the fairways I played on at KGPA last week were in far better condition than the greens here at Port Klang. The turf mates were in a shocking state of repair and with the large ruts across the course it was a real adventure (torture) to navigate each hole. 3 of the turf mates broke down during our round.
The weather and bad haze added more gloom and doom to our day out and by the end of the first 9 it was pouring – only positive thing if we can at least try to find one …. is the fact that Allan McNicoll smiled as he got to try out his new tropical rain jacket. The smile was short lived as we had to rough it back to the clubhouse on the last few holes in the heavy rain.
It cleared slightly so after a 5 minute break at the club (shack!) a few of us soldiered on for more punishment on the other 9 holes. The front 9 (we played the back 9 first) were in marginally better condition but not enough to warrant on the “passable golf course scale”.
As a group I feel we need to delete this course from our playing roster as it really does not come close to a playing standard we should be enjoying (even at our standard of golf). Also it’s a fair distance to this course for most and the seafood restaurant we normally retire to after the game seems to have declined in its quality and standards. many thanks to Ian Dickson who chipped in RM200 as a farewell gesture as he’s heading off to UK for a few months …. perhaps the rain of today would get him in the mood for Old Blighty weather!
Out of 16 starters only 8 players managed to finish a complete round …. some smart players retired after 4 or 5 holes. The winner of today, returning after a 2 week China trip, was Glen Wombwell with 101 for 37 points and second place was shared by Martin Walsh, Mike Williams, Ian Dickson and Allan McNicoll all at 32 points. It was certainly good to see a high handicap player winning particularly under such arduous conditions as we experienced today …. well done Glen!
