Christmas Lunch – Coliseum Restaurant – 18th December 2019

Following up on the final invitation, yesterday we had our traditional yearly Xmas Luncheon at Coliseum Cafe & Hotel downtown Kuala Lumpur.

Everyone arrived in time at the bar to have ample time for beers, gin & tonic etc and catching up, before we assembled at our usual room at the back of the restaurant.

Andrew began by asking for a toast for our, no longer with us Loose Canons, since it began years ago;

Murray Preston
Gordon Wingate
Andre Holm
Roger Smith

and this year

Ray Funnel
David Hughes

After that the groups founder Mike Smith said some well thought of encouraging words.

Follow up on that the Convener that’s me, was asked to say something;

– the number players per game has gone down since the heydays of 6-7 flights which is a bit much actually

– in general several players would like to play more games closer to KL

Perhaps I did not say all this but that’s the situation we are in; more games closer to KL

I don’t mind the extra travel now and then but if several are not prepared to, it defeats the purpose

Every groups need new heads/faces now and then. I read that Sir Alex Ferguson during his days came into

the situation that Manchester United had to change or mover people around every fourth year or so.

Coming end of February next year I have been the convener for three years and in my mind I have had the thoughts is time to handover the baton to someone else and just enjoy playing.

So it’s a done deal, Martin Belderink and Jan van Driel will take over from March 2020.

My last game as a convener will be Feb 25th and it well end were it started, at Bkt Unggul.

Would like to thank Andrew Robinson for organizing this event and the food I think was excellent and better than last year.

I believe the pictures attached speaks for themselves.

Xmas Lunch – Coliseum Cafe – 14th December 2018

The annual Loose Cannons Xmas Lunch was again held at the Coliseum Cafe in KL. We convened in the bar prior to lunch and had the opportunity to honour the LC Xmas Lunch virgins (in this case Julien Hodson Walker) who duly stood on the bar and was annointed with Xmas snow.

Loose Cannons Xmas Lunch 2018

We then moved to the back room for lunch which was the usual routine of party hats, poppers, wine, and bad jokes. Lunch comprised of prawn cocktail starters, steak pie, turkey with trimmings and apple pie and ice cream.

Andrew Robinson, who kindly arranged the event, made a toast to absent friends who are no longer with us prior to lunch; Roger Smith, Murray Preston, Gordon Wingate and Andre Holm. We were joined by our founding father, Mike Smith, who made a nice opening speech to the group.

By the look of all the photos much fun was had by all attendees.

Loose Cannons Xmas Lunch – Coliseum Cafe – 15th December 2017

IMG_6594We held our traditional Loose Cannons Xmas Lunch at the usual venue of the Coliseum Cafe on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in KL on Friday 15th December. As per normal procedure we all met in the bar for pre-lunch drinks and had the extra touch of some santa hats to wear for the occassion. Everyone brought a bottle of wine and our Chief Somelier Richard Moss inspected these bottles and decided on which bottle was the worst one; in this case it was the one brought by Peter McGowan and he was fined the normal RM50.

We adjourned to the rear restaurant where our table awaited us and the usual festivities ensued after a welcome address by our Convenor, Hans Berger, and a toast to absent friends, Murray Preston, Gordon Wingate and Andre Holm.

During the lunch of prawn cocktail, roast turkey, beef pie and apple pie with ice cream everyone participated by telling a joke or singing a song.

The slideshow of photos below sums up the day.

Loose Cannons Xmas Lunch – Coliseum – 9th December 2016

Once again we returned to the Coliseum Cafe for our annual Xmas lunch. There were 16 of us in attendance this year and as per the usual procedure we had drinks prior to lunch in the front bar from 12 noon till around 1pm. We then moved to the back restaurant at our usual long table strategically placed behind some screens, no doubt to shield the other diners from our rabble.

Mike Smith made the introductory remarks giving a brief history of the Loose Cannons golf group and then proposed a toast to absent friends, Gordon Wingate and Murray Preston.

Following the explosion of poppers, tooters and spraying of fake snow we commenced lunch. Interspersed with the food and wine we were entertained by numerous jokes, recitals and songs by the members. Much of these we had heard before but it was always entertaining to hear the same old jokes and songs yet again.

16 bottles of wine were demolished during the lunch after the numerous beers in the bar beforehand so all members duly staggered home well fed and watered.

Loose Cannons Annual Xmas Lunch – Coliseum Cafe – 16th December 2015

Once again the Loose Cannons group descended upon the Coliseum in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman for the annual Xmas luncheon. We had 19 attendees who assembled in the bar for pre-lunch drinks prior to moving through to the rear to our lunch table. Andrew Robinson made some excellent opening remarks with a toast to departed friends (Murray Preston and Gordon Wingate and setting out the ground rules for the day’s festivities. Various dress code fines were administered as was a fine for the worst bottle of wine brought along (well done Robert Mulliss!).
It was interesting to note that the cumulative age of the 19 attendees was 1,234 years making the average age of the Loose Cannons group attending 65.
Lunch was the usual fare (prawn cocktail, pumpkin & carrot soup, steak pie and ice cream) washed down with much wine and some whisky to finish off. During the course of the lunch we were entertained by numerous jokes and songs by the group, many of which we had heard before, but were none-the-less most welcome.

Below are some photos from the day’s festivities …. which look remarkably like the photos from the year before …. and the year before that ……

Loose Cannons Xmas Lunch – Coliseum Cafe – 12th December 2014

The annual Loose Cannons Xmas lunch was held once again at the classic venue of the Coliseum Cafe on Jalan Tuankul Abdul Rahman on Friday 12th December 2014 … probably because none else would have us!
We had 19 shows for today’s frivolity and as per standard practice we all met up in the front bar before lunch for some pre-lunch drinks. Glen unfortunately could not make it as he was up-to-his-ass in contractors at home without the supervising builder who had disappeared to Cambodia. It was nice to see that the bar and the restaurant through the back were proudly displaying some photographs from our previous escapades here last Xmas …. no doubt after today there will be a few more!
At 1pm prompt we adjourned to the back room behind a rather meagre modesty screen to shroud us from the general public …. this was to no avail as the noise we made no doubt disturbed all diners in this area. As we sat down we commenced the usual child-like displays of firing off poppers, spraying string on each other and generally making rather a lot of mess and noise.
We commenced proceedings with a toast to absent friends and raised our glasses and thoughts for the late Murray Preston and Gordon Wingate who have sadly left for higher fairways. A number of dress code violations were pointed out to some 5 members and they had to down their glass of beer or wine.
The food arrived quickly .. starting with prawn cocktails then followed by a rather tasty pumpkin soup. The wine of course was flowing freely now and we started the traditional procedure of individuals standing and reciting poetry, singing songs or telling jokes. Hans Berger was quick off the mark with his rat-at-tat song which he had already done in the bar prior to lunch.
The main course was the traditional steak pies with vegetables and salad and we also had some very nice roast chicken with gravy. Desert was ice cream and apple pie …. although Hans Berger managed to conjure up an additional chocolate cake from the kitchen somehow.
As the wine continued to flow there were many contributions to the entertainment including Irish songs from Martin Walsh and of course the classic “On Ilkley Moor” from Richard Moss. Iain Wise did another golf impression but didn’t quite match the performance he delivered in Batam. Barry Cousins read an amusing letter and his reply to HSBC regarding insurance cover and also showed the group an ancient hickory shafted golf stick to the group. Tony Morris told his usual annual joke which always goes down well and Robert Mulliss led many a rugby song with the support of the group. Mike Smith told a number of good jokes and also recited some great poems (albeit struggling occasionally to remember the lines) – well done Mike. Paul Geddes was also in good form but for some of his recitals needed a Scottish-English translator. Brian Stubbs was in good vocal form with many jokes no doubt aided by the many white wines he slammed down with Robert Mulliss.
Another excellent Xmas lunch and no doubt we will have a few on-on stories later perhaps.
Many thanks to Andrew Robinson who organised and booked the lunch.

Loose Cannons Xmas Lunch – Coliseum Cafe – 9th December 2013

15 Loose Cannons turned up for the annual revelry at the Coliseum Cafe to celebrate Xmas. Pre-drinks in the Coliseum Bar were partaken, then we all quickly adjourned to the back dining room, tactfully placed behind some dark screens to continue the festivities. Lunch comprised prawn cocktail, “Desperate Dan” style steak pie with mash potatoes then apple pie and ice cream … all washed down with copious quantities of wine.

Entertainment was provided by each LC member who took turns to recite stories or jokes or songs. Xmas hats, poppers and fake snow was in abundance to add to the festive atmosphere. All in all a predictable but enjoyable event and many thanks to Andrew Robinson for making the necessary arrangements.

Based on the newly instigated USGA handicaps within the society and the effective online system for calculating this Allan McNicoll was proudly presented with a prize for the “Most Improved ” Golfer for  2013. This was based on scores from 1st March 2013 till December – next year we can calculate this on a full year basis and we will have another exciting prize for this most coveted award.

A few photos and video below sadly demonstrate the child-like behaviour by all of the Loose Cannons attendees at the Xmas lunch …..
