On a cloudy and occasionally drizzly day 17 golfers set off from two tee boxes on time at 0800 hrs. The course played even longer than usual, after the overnight rain, with little or no run on the fairways. Greens were true although a little slow. The high scores reflected the challenging course, with only 6 players, breaking the 100.

The winner on the day, due for a win, was Ted Parslow with a gross of 85, for 42 points, cut 6 points. Runner up was Ray Funnell with 98 for 39 points, cut 1. No brotherly blood was spilt, as Geoff Parslow just beat his brother with the lowest gross of 84.

Bernard was celebrating his 100th game with Cannons and donated very generously, prizes for NTP, bottle of wine, First, second and third places, box of balls, and a wine for most golf, Peter Davies was the recipient. A big thank you, Bernard.

Winners for NTP were :

Hole 2 No one claimed. Aftab was on the green, no measurement recorded.
Hole 8 Andrew Robinson 4.73 m
Hole 11 Terry Scott (guest) 10.0 m
Hole 16 Geoff Parslow 4.1 m

Another excellent lunch was enjoyed at the Tang Restaurant post game along with an appropriate number of refreshments. Richard Moss joined us for lunch and shows excellent signs of recovery after his hip replacement – we hope to see him out on the turf soon.

Report

A rainy start to the New Year and our first game in the Year of the Snake!  And the Pro-Tem Convenors faithful assistant had not booked any flights…..?  And with another mini-competition of 7 flights there was some concern at the outset.  But we were all away in good time ahead of the rival comp and all round in good time in sublime weather after the drizzle lifted.

The winner was Tony Morris with gross 84 for 50 points!!!  R-up was Erol Akinci with gross 91 for 46 points.  Tony’s handicap is shaved 14 and Erol’s 1.  Ted Parslow had the lowest gross with 81 and Peter Davies and Barry Cousins shared the highest gross with 112 apiece.

Apres golf we adjourned to Restaurant Chin Hiong on the way back to the toll and had a very good lunch, albeit not appreciated by the entire throng as some of the dishes were far removed from meat and 2 veg.

And finally Tony Morris gets the prize for maximising the spelling errors in Allan McNicoll’s name  on his Top Premier golf book ….

Results – Nilai Springs Golf & Country Club – 5th February 2013

18 Players teed off on time from the Mango and Pines 9’s. Unfortunately we had 2 late  withdrawals, as a result of ill health.

Conditions were excellent, with light cloud and a little breeze. The course played well, although some of the greens appeared to still be suffering a little from the recent rains. The scores reflected the good conditions, with only 4 players not breaking the 100.

Andre Holm was the winner who shot an excellent 84 for 48 points. This score did not reflect the full story. He scored 44 points on his last 14 holes, and that included a blow out.!!   A Great round. Sorry Andre cut 12. In second place was Kevin Wiggins with 86 for 43 points. Cut only 1.  Lowest gross was Geoff Mclaws with 79.

Lunch was taken at the club with liberal amounts of jugs.

Report

14 players teed off with a chilly start, but very quickly the sun was out and the stunning scenery and the incredibly clear, unpolluted blue sky made for excellent playing conditions. For me, perhaps the most spectacular weather day I have ever had “up the hill” .We were even treated to a troop of gibbons playing in the trees and the rough, with the dominant male,

breaking off dead tree branches and throwing them onto the fringe of the green. The course was in good condition, a few soggy patches, not unexpected, and the greens were also good and played very true.  A good lunch followed down the hill at 126.  As is now customary for this venue.

To celebrate Ray’s 250th game with LCs, 4 sleeves were up for the NTPs. Winners were, Kevin Wiggins, Andrew Robinson, Tony Morris, and Gordon Wingate.

The winner of the invisible January trophy, was Andrew Robinson with 95 for 38 points, just beating Bernard Rohman with 92 for 37 points. Andrew cut 4 and Bernard only 1.

Lowest gross was Geoff Mclaws with 82. Would have been a little better if the caddy had had any idea where his shots finished up….!!  An excellent 3 over on the back 9, including another lost ball on the 18 th.

Report

A beautiful day for golf, the course had dried up very well and was in excellent condition. The greens were good, and an enjoyable day was had by all. Followed by, I hear a good lunch.

Pre registration worked well and the club proved very helpful. We teed off on time and all flights were back in around 4 hours. Certainly we will play this course again in the circuit.

Now they have our birthdates on file, next time will be even easier. Also the course is very good value.

No longer the bridesmaid… Stuart Taylor was the winner with 89 gross for 41 points. At last, he has a cut of 5….Second was Andrew Robinson with 94 for 40 points. Cut 1. Lowest gross was by Geoff Parslow with an excellent 79 for 39 points.
