AMVERTON COVE REPORT-03-09-2024

Cannon’s,

The first game of September was held at Amverton Cove, with overcast weather, very pleasant with a nice sea breeze. The course was in good condition and had nice greens. Only one flight started on hole # 10 just before the crowd, and we finished below 4 hours. The winner today was again Josef Winter with a nice 87 for 36 points, followed by Ricardo Castro and Fritz Katzengruber booth with 32 points, and Hans finished the flight with a reasonable 26 points. After a good and refreshing shower, we rushed to I Suka restaurant for a good lunch with good food and nice and cool watermelon juice and beer. Josef got the prize for the win and also for August being champion and he was very happy and congratulations to him. Next week we will go North to Bkt Beruntung for one more adventure.

Cheers

NILAI SPRINGS REPORT-20-08-2024

Cannon’s,

Back to Nilai to use the vouchers before the end of the month, but only 10 players signed up for the game. We played the Mango and Island Nines, weather was overcast with black clouds and after nine holes we had to stop for 30 minutes, and when the game resumed, the weather started to open and we finished with some sunshine and blue sky. The course was playable with some soggy fairway areas but very nice with fast greens overall. The winner was Bernhard Romahn with a strong 80 for 40 points, followed by Roland Steiner and Ricardo Castro booth with 36 points. With these results, Bernhard is now leading the monthly competition with 73 Points; second place is Martin Middleton with 72; third place is Ricardo with 70 points. Lunch at the usual restaurant with excellent food and cool beers.

KELAB DIRAJA KAMPUNG REPORT-06-08-2024

Cannon’s,

After 8 years we returned to Royal Kampung also known as Kelab DiRaja Kampung. It is one of the oldest golf clubs in Malaysia and the oldest club in Selangor, opened in 1910 by the British, and even all these years the clubhouse still keeps all the colonial charm with the original design and a lot of old pictures on the vitrine showing how active was the club on those days. Nine brave LCs traveled all the way from KL and with early morning black clouds and a little rain, we all started on different tee boxes before 8:00 am. Seven of us, it was our first experience playing this course and I’m sure they enjoyed the atmosphere. The overcast weather stays most of the morning, only the last hour opened with some blu sky and sunny. The course was in good shape dry with playable greens but a lot of improvement around the course with many workers cleaning all the bushes between the fairways. We welcomed back, Josef back to the group after 10 10-week holidays in Germany and a lot of hunger to play golf. The winner today was Martin Belderink with a solid 94 for 38 points, followed by Frans Bakker with 93 for 33 points, and in third place was Martin Middleton with 99 for 32 points. After the game and a good shower, we all rushed to Jeti Mei restaurant and we had a nice and cheap lunch with cool beers.

Cheers

DANAU REPORT-30-07-2024

Cannon’s,

The last game of July was held at Danau, one of the most infamous golf courses for some of our members for different reasons and excuses. Today we had 3 flights (11 players) and all started before 8:00 am on hole # 10. Sunny weather and blue sky all morning turning hot and dry around 9:30 am. The fairways were dry, with nice and fast greens, but some, the pin position was quite challenging for most of us, costing a lot of puts, but that’s Danau greens, always like this all the time we play there. The winner today was David Cheung with a fantastic score of 85 for 40 points, second place, Jan van Driel also with a nice 92 for 38 points, and in third place with the lowest gross of the day, was Ricardo Castro with a solid 76 for 37 points. With these final results, Jan van Driel is the July champion with a total of 84 points, followed by Ricardo Castro with 80 points, and in third place, Martin Middleton and David Cheng, booth with 79 points. For the LCOTY competition, Jan van Driel took over second place with 65 points, Bernhard is now in third place with 64 points, and the leader, Ricardo Castro consolidated his first position with 86 points. I must say July was very competitive, with quite high scores, making the competition for the last 5 months quite interesting and good quality of golf. Free lunch, sponsored by the LC Kitty, at East of Highway restaurant for eight of us, with a nice food selection ordered by our F&B expert, Iain Wise, but he had some problems with the Chinese staff ordering the Currie Vegetables dish (quite a common dish in KL), taking a few minutes and 3 people to understand what Iain was asking.

Cheers

TASIK PUTERI REPORT-23-07-2024

Cannon’s

Back to Tasik Puteri, with hot and sunny weather. Three flights started before 8:00 am on Puteri Nine, crossing over to the Putera Nine. The course was dry, with good fairways, with nice and speedy greens, costing a lot of puts to most of us. The winner today was our international member, Frans Bakker with a solid 89 for 38 points, beating OCB, Jan van Driel, and Dave Evans, and in third place, with the lowest score, Ricardo Castro with a nice 76 for 37 points. With these results, Jan van Driel still led the pack with 84 points for the July competition, followed by Ricardo Castro with 80 and Martin Middleton and Dave Evans very close with 79 and 78 points respectively, so a lot to fight in the next final game for July. Lunch at the club lounge.

KINRARA REPORT-16-07-2024

Cannon’s,

Back to Kinrara and the course was quite dry with only two or three fairways a little wet, and slow greens with channeling pin positions, cost too many puts for almost all players. We all started from hole # 10 with a little drizzling rain but all stopped after hole one and we had overcast weather all morning. The course was completely empty with the first flight finishing the round around 11:10 am, The second and third flights finished around 11:45 am, so a good time to have a good shower and no rush to go to the restaurant. The winner today was Ricardo Castro with an excellent 74 for 40 points, followed by Charlie Chow with a nice 92 for 37 points, and in third place David Cheung and Reini Tan finished with a reasonable 34 points. With these results in the monthly competition, Jan van Driel kept his strong first position with 84 points followed now by Ricardo Castro with a solid 80 points, and in third place is Martin Middleton with 78 points. Following Reinli’s recommendation, we tried a new restaurant (Dream Kitchen) for a private lunch with cool beers, with special dishes freshly cooked by the chef. It’s always good to try something new to have more other options and experience something new. We had one minute of silence and a toast as a tribute to our LC member Andrew Barber. All our condolences and prayers to the family and May He Rest In Peace.

ANDREW BARBER TRIBUTE-13-07-2024

Andrew Barber showed his skills at Clearwater Sanctuary on 23 March 2010 (LC Northern Tour, Ipoh).

Gents,

Andrew Barber joined Loose Cannons in 2010 with his first game on 23-03-2010, at Clearwater Sanctuary, the first game of the LC Northern Tour. In 2010 he played 13 games followed by a long gap without playing and only in 2018 he played the last two games with LC completing 15 games. He will always be remembered for his often quirky sense of humor, a man of many talents, kind, considerate, intelligent, always curious, and a loving and proud family man, he married Caroline, and they had two daughters, Sarah and Catherine, really a true gentleman. A few notes about Andrew Barber’s life, born in Uganda where his father was a District Officer, had first-class honors from Cambridge in History, had a successful career with the Foreign Office in London, Jakarta, Ethiopia, and Malaysia, and then set up a Security company in Malaysia, also successful. A keen historian and author of several books, a prestigious speaker at many conferences and on cruise ships, and a long service on the Alice Smith School Board of Governors. Andrew was also a keen golfer and trekker in Nepal and Eastern Europe.

Thanks to Andrew Robinson for some notes and information

ON BEHALF OF ALL OUR LC MEMBERS, OUR DEEPEST CONDOLENCES AND PRAYERS TO ANDREW BARBER AND, HIS FAMILY, MAY HE REST IN PEACE.

STAFFIELD REPORT-09-07-2024

Cannon’s,

The second game of July was held at Staffield, always in great condition to play with nice and dry fairways and nice greens. Three flights started on the Western Nine before 8:00 am, crossing to the Southern Nine and we all finished before noon. Greens on the first nine were nice but fast, but on the second nine, they were the opposite, very slow. With these nice course conditions, we had quite a good round of results with the majority of the players scoring over 30 points except the winner, David Evans who scored 40 points followed again by Jan van Driel with 39, and in third place was Martin Middleton with 35 points. Jim Stevenson is now an LC full member with his 5th game, receiving some LC gifts (LC Flask, LC sleeve of balls, and 2 LC greens marker chips), congrats to him, and welcome to the LC family. Lunch was at the club and this time we had a battle against an army of flies which turned our lunch quite uncomfortable and challenging trying to protect our food and drinks, I hope next time they can find a simple solution to reduce the number of flies, but even we complained, the manager seems not worried about the situation blaming the nearby chicken factory. Anyway, we played so many times at Staffield and we never experienced such an increasing amount of flies.

Cheers
