Results – Nilai Springs – 4th October 2016

It was a beautiful clear morning with 26 Loose Cannons players teeing off on the Mango & Pines 9’s of Nilai Springs Golf & Country Club. It is usually a challenge getting started at this club but luckily there were very few other players so we all got off on two boxes relatively efficiently.

Weather was wonderful and the course was in very good shape although some greens were a little on the bumpy side.

We finished by around 12:30pm and although we had planned to stay at the club for lunch and drinks they informed us they were “out of beer” so we quickly changed plans and headed to our reliable Restoran East of Highway for lunch and some much needed cold beers. Paul Geddes and Iain Wise were celebrating very recent birthdays so they kindly handles the refreshment bill making it an even more enjoyable lunch. Thank You to Paul and Iain.

Results

Some good scores today at Nilai Springs as is usually expected at this course. The winner was Stuart Taylor with 83 for 42 points on count back from Paul Geddes with 81 for 42 points (24 points on back 9 vs 20 points). 3rd place was shared between Glen Wombwell (96 for 41) and Allan Wright (91 for 41). Best gross of the day was Geoff McLaws with 78.

Results – Amverton Cove – 13th September 2016

img_9845

There were only 12 players this week to enjoy the delights of Amverton Cove Golf & Island Resort. We got off early on the back 9 just after 7:30am in front of a competition group that were also at the club and therefore managed to navigate round the course in fairly quick time. The course was in better condition than the last time we played so it is good to see the course returning to some of its former glory. There had been some recent rain so there were some wet patches around the course but the greens were generally very good although some seemed very slow compared to others.

After the game we had lunch at the nearby seafood restaurant as per usual where we managed a large choice of seafood washed down by many Tiger beers.

Results

The winner this week was Ricardo Castro with an excellent 84 for 44 points with runner up being Ted Parslow with an 84 for 40 points. Best gross was shared between Ricardo and Ted with their 84’s. Full results below:

Results – Staffield Golf & Country Resort – 30th August 2016

IMG_9701

The August Monthly Trophy Game was held at Staffield Golf & Country Club. We were delayed in starting today as there was heavy rain but we eventually got off at around 8:30am or so. However the rain persisted for the first 9 holes making it a bit of a slog dealing with sodden gloves and golf club grips. However by the back 9 the rain stopped making it more pleasant.

The course was in very good condition despite the rain and the greens really excellent. There were only a few small patches of water which we had to get relief from on the greens.

Due to the late start we decided to have lunch at the club instead of the drive back north to East of Highway Restaurant.

Results

Some high scores today were recorded due to the rainy conditions but we did have some good scores in the first few places. Winner of the August Trophy was Mike Smith with a 96 for 40 points – congratulations Mike! Runner up was Jeff Pearce with 93 for 39 points, receiving a bottle of wine kindly donated by Ricardo Castro. 3rd place was Mike Williams with 87 for 38. Best gross of the day was Andrew Cseszko with an 84 ….. although we were about to amend this to 85 for the extra stroke he took with ReinLi’s club to break his car window after locking his car keys in!! Results – Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort – 23rd August 2016

IMG_9592

It has been 10 years or so since Loose Cannons played up at Awana so after an invitation by the new Golf Manager, Russell Maw, to try out the new and improved course we had 3 flights for this weeks game. The drive up the hill to Awana is still tortuous but the cool air and mountain views once you get there are worth it.

We tee’d off at around 8:00am on Index 1 Hole No 1 which claimed a few early victims with OB left and hazard on the right. The course was in very good condition even though it was a little dry and the greens generally very good although some seemed somewhat slower than others. The course is very tight requiring accurate placement of the ball on the drive and approach …. something many of our members are not particularly good at …. so there were some large contributions of balls to the surrounding jungle and water!

Highlight hole for our group was hole no 11 where Mike Smith pulled his ball left and thought it was red stakes … it was not … so he drove all the way back to the tee to play again in an attempt to scrabble a point. He made a 7 so didn’t get a point but was later informed later by the group behind that he had tee’d off the 2nd time from the ladies tee so his score (had he scored) would have been null and void anyway. This didn’t help Mike’s mood as he struggled with his game today on this adventurous course.

The air was cool so it was a pleasant round and the views and some of the hole layouts were spectacular. We all finished by around 12:30 or so. The original plan was to lunch and refresh at the club but after finding out they only had 9 cans of Carlsberg beer (no draft beer available) and these cans of beer were RM20 a pop …. we decided to head back down the hill to a good Chinese restaurant at Gohtong Jaya. Here we had good food and reasonably priced beer at RM20 a large bottle. So this is something the management at Awana Golf Resort should note …. if they plan on this being a “premier” or “exclusive” course then it should have some basic food and refreshment services at a reasonable price. The course is good but not worth their normal asking price of RM300 …. particularly when you consider the rather sub-standard club facilities (changing rooms and F&B services).

Results

Some high scores today, as expected, but the winner today with a gross 100 and 37 points was Andrew Robinson (cut 4). Runner up was Stuart Taylor with the best gross of the day of 89 with 35 points and 3rd place was Ricardo Castro with 91 for 34 points. Full results below:

Results – KGSAAS – 16th August 2016

IMG_9459

5 flights of Loose Cannons teed off from the President and Sultan 9’s at KGSAAS on a hazy but relatively cool morning. Progress was fast as the course was very quiet so all flights were finished by 12 or just after. The course was in good condition as it usually is. Interestingly they seemed to be carrying out quite a bit of tree trimming and felling around the course … the contractor for this obviously had some kind of accident during this as there was a wrecked crane truck on the 4th hole of the Sultan 9 (see photographs below) …. looks like a felled tree branch fell down and wrecked the truck cabin!

George Murray did not finish today as his golf shoe gave out on the 4th hole of the game …. probably being due to being left in the cupboard for the last 2-3 years!

After the game we had lunch at the clubhouse cafe along with jugs of Carlsberg beer which was on special offer …. buy 2 and get one free.

A big thank you to Sigi for sponsoring his flight which left us with a reasonable cash surplus towards lunch.

Results

The winer today was Mahmud Mohamed with a gross 86 and 41 points (cut 5). Mahmud didn’t make lunch to receive his RM50 prize and as per normal procedure the winnings went into the pot and we enjoyed the beer on Mahmud’s behalf! Runner up was Sigi with 88 for 40 points and 3rd place went to Ted Parslow with 85 for 39. Full results below:

Results – Monterez Golf & Country Club – 9th August 2016

IMG_9324

It has been a while since we played Monterez so we returned there today with 16 Loose Cannons teeing off from 2 boxes. Weather was good and the course condition was generally good – however this is a tight course with numerous OB’s which some of us found to our peril.

Welcome back to George Murray who joined us again after a 3 year plus absence to replace his knees and have some back surgery.

We had one casualty today with ReinLi Tan abandoning his game after  4 holes with some serious bowel problems …. suffice to say the toilet between the 4th and 5th hole is now probably condemned due to Health, Safety & BioHazard issues.

IMG_9326
DO NOT ENTER …….. BIOHAZARD!

We had lunch at Choong Foong Restaurant after the game as this restaurant is very close to Monterez with Barry Cousins joining us and doing a great job ordering the food. Washed down of course with numerous amber ales!

Results

Our winner today was Allan Wright with 91 for 42 points (cut 6). Runner up was Geoff McLaws with the best gross of the day of 77 for 40 points. 3rd place was Andrew Robinson with 97 for 39 points. Full scores below:

Results – Berjaya Hills Golf & Country Club – 2nd August 2016

IMG_9216

The weather and temperature were perfect for a morning’s golf up at Berjaya Hills Golf & Country Club. We had 19 Loose Cannons today and we all got off on various tee boxes to ease congestion which was good resulting in all of us returning after the game at much the same time. The course was in good condition and there is still evidence of ongoing works in bunkers and fairways so at least they are taking some effort now to maintain the course.

It was a beautiful cool start as we teed off and only got a little warmer by the time we finished. Sadly no evidence or sounds from the resident gibbons.

We had lunch at our usual Restaurant 126 back down the hill in Kampung Bukit Tinggi with good food and cheap beer. With the carry over from the golf registration and a kind donation by Bernard Romahn for his eagle (Many thanks Bernard) we only had to contribute RM10 for lunch …. excellent deal.

Results

We had 3 players tied on 40 points today at the top of the table. The winner was Reinli Tan with 97 for 40 points, on count back from Allan Wright with 95 for 40. Allan took 2nd place on count back from Bernard Romahn with 84 for 40 and won a nice bottle of Portugese wine kindly donated by Ricardo Castro. Best gross was Geoff McLaws with an 81. Results – Tasik Puteri Golf & Country Club – 26th July 2016

IMG_9115

The monthly trophy game for July was played at Tasik Puteri Golf & Country Club with 20 Loose cannons players plus 2 guests (welcome to David Schipano and Daniel Schipano) on a beautiful morning. The course was in pretty good condition and we got started on two tee boxes and got round the course in good time finishing by 12:00 – 12:30.

After the game we had lunch at Chin Heong Restoran on the outskirts of Rawang just before the entrance to the highway. The food was very good with an interesting assortment of “new food” including black pepper tau foo, deep fried tilapia origami and some large frog ordered by ReinLi Tan.

Results – Royal Kampung Kuantan – 19th July 2016

IMG_8972

We had 19 Loose Cannons to experience the delights of the walking course at Royal Kampung Kuantan Club today ….. well eventually 19 players with ReinLi tan showing up late and joining his flight by the 3rd hole. Many players who had not played this course were delighted by the quaint and old style clubhouse and I’m sure they enjoyed the course as well.

We welcomed back Allan McNicoll to the group today – he is back in Malaysia for a 5 week holiday so we will no doubt be seeing him taking advantage of playing golf in the coming weeks.

The course was in good condition after the initial start where the greens were wet and slow. The weather was pleasant with a small breeze which made walking an excellent option. With 19 of us and probably a lack of caddies we had the caddies “double bag” for two players (not to be confused with the double-bag phrase used in Aberdeen for the situation where you end up back home with a rather ugly bird!) The caddies knowledge of the course and the game of golf were somewhat dubious …… one of our caddies kept on stating “middle of fairway boss” when any ball headed was not OB”. Their knowledge of distances to hazards and the hole were very poor. A drive some 90m from the green was stated to be “on the apron” on one hole.

We made good time round the course and then headed into Ijok to the Jet Mei Seafood Restaurant where we had an excellent lunch. Vincent Vijayan kindly put in RM200 to celebrate his birthday so with the excess money from the golf game and this we walked out   of the restaurant without any need to pay anything more …. furthermore we still had some RM164 to go into the kitty.

Results

Our winner today with the best gross of 78 and 40 Stableford points was Andrew Cseszko. Runner up was Paul Geddes with 84 for 38 and he was the luck recipient of the prize for 2nd place today of a fine bottle of Portugese wine kindly donated by our new member Rocardo Castro. 3rd place was Peter Kenyon with 95 for 37.
