BUKIT KEMUNING REPORT-20-12-2022

Gents,

We teed off on a very pleasant morning with three flights and not too many other players. The first flight was a three-ball and finished after three hours, whereas the other full flights had problems with slow play on the course.

Bukit Kemuning was very wet today. Some parts of the fairways were really flooded and it was easy to lose balls there. Some of the greens were sanded with the consequence that part of it was slow and other parts were very fast. In short, not a course to play in these wet conditions.

The scores were actually very good. Martin equaled his handicap with 36 points but ended third. Bent did it better with 38 points, but the real champion today was Bernhard with a whopping 42 points. A gross score of 81 strokes!! With these results all open to the last day to know who will win the December competition.

We had a good lunch at Gather Gather Kitchen where we welcomed Fritz as a new player for the Loose Cannons (at last!!). Montano played his 2nd game for LC.

Next week we will play at Seri Selangor.

TASIK PUTERI REPORT-13-12-2022

Gents,

A small group of 1 flight only of the Loose Cannons teed off this morning at Tasik Puteri and we played Puteri and Putera nines. Always a friendly course to play, and so also this morning. The weather was very friendly to us, no sun, no rain, and a bit misty in the morning made it a very good experience.

The course was wet of course, with the present weather, but it didn’t hinder us too much. Every now and then we had to place our balls somewhere else, trying to find a dry spot, but that was OK. The greens were very good, dry, and fast.

Lunch was usual at the club, and the best stf was Marvin but as a guest (2nd game) can’t win, with 37 Stableford points. Roland finished with 34 points in second and claim the winner voucher for the day, Martin had 31 and Jan closed with 29 points.

All in all a good morning out.

Next week Bukit Kemuning.

2022 CHRISTMAS LUNCH AND YEAR REPORT-09-12-2022

Cannon’s

The end of the year 2022 is nearing and it is good to look back and forward. I am taking parts of my presentation which I gave during the Christmas lunch a couple of weeks ago.

The past year, 2022, was again a more or less “normal” year. We could play golf again without too many restrictions and it shows: we played more than 50 games on in total 22 different courses. Ricardo and I tried to do our best to accommodate everyone by choosing partly challenging and partly “easier” courses. In that, we organized a very successful tour in Melaka in December. We had 9 players, played 4 different courses, and had a lot of fun!

Loose Cannons had also a successful year in that we welcomed 12 new players. A number of them are already full members and have the official LC handicap. It resulted in the fact that we are more and more playing with three flights, and also the attendance for the lunches has increased!

The best player this year is undoubtedly Ricardo, who improved his handicap to 7.

Just to repeat the handicap system: it is based on the average of the best 8 games of the last 20 games played. Every week the new exact and playing handicaps are calculated and used for the following game.

Financially we try to break even, sometimes a bit plus, sometimes a bit minus. We started the year with a very healthy “kitty” and over the whole year, we spent about 600 RM more than we received. That is not a problem as we still have some money left. Apart from the usual costs like green fees and lunches, we welcome new players, and new members with some small gifts, as we do with birthdays. Next to that, we have the weekly winners, monthly winners, and the best player of the year.

The blog has been well visited, with more than 6500 views over the year, from a wide array of countries.

For the coming year, Ricardo managed to get Pampas interested as a sponsor for the Loose Cannons. We should have received a membership card to get the necessary reductions when eating in one of their restaurants.

Ricardo and I decided to take on the convener ship for another year, but 2023 will be the last year for us. We think that the time has come for others to take over. Our experience is that it is doable with two players, as we can take over from each other in case of traveling etc. So volunteers are needed!!

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a very healthy and prosperous 2023!

Jan & Ricardo

A FAMOSA 2nd AWAY GAME REPORT-08-12-2022

Cannon’s,

The second day of the competition was at A’ Famosa, just north of Melaka. A beautiful setting with a lot of very-needed renovation going on in the clubhouse. We played the Rocky and Crocodile Course. Very challenging, well maintained, and a blessing to drive in practical new (electric) buggies. A good change from the previous day. The weather was already a bit threatening in the morning, and yes, the skies opened when flight 1 was just finished, flight 2 was approaching the 18th green, and flight 3 just finished the 16th hole. For the scores overall the results of the first 16 holes were counted…

A bit of a problem is finding a proper place to have lunch. The restaurant we chose was closed, the second one was a curry house with very spicy food, and the third, where we ended up, was a very simple eatery but was sufficient for us.

The overall winner of the competition was Bernhard, who was unbeatable this time. Runner up for the competition was Ricardo.

Looking back to a very well-spent tour, with a lot of fun and good fellowship, we turned home in the rain all the way to KL.

TIARA MELAKA 1st AWAY GAME REPORT-07-12-2022

Cannon’s

[Just an introduction to the fun game, On the first day, on Monday, we had the “fun game” with 6 of us. We welcomed Peter Kane, a new member, definitely planning to join the loose Cannons, and he decided to join the tour as the first event with us. So we played with Bernhard, Ricardo, Ronald, Peter, Diederik and Jan.

We played Seremban International, a course we never played before and we were therefore anxious to see how that was. The travel to the course is only a couple of minutes more than driving to Nilai Springs or Staffield. The course is outside Seremban, so you don’t have to go into town at all.

At arrival, check-in was easy and efficient, not very busy, and very friendly staff.

It was an interesting course, the first nine a bit soggy, of course, due to the wet weather recently. It caused us to lose some plugged balls, but interesting holes. The second nine was drier, and also the greens were faster. In total, not an easy course, but worthwhile to come back to. We decided to put this course on our list of golf courses. Lunch at the club is very affordable.]

Back to the first away game,

Wednesday we played the first game of the competition. Tiara Melaka, home course of Mike, was the choice and there we played the Lake and Meadow nines. Beautiful layout of the course, where the buggy tracks can use some proper maintenance. The buggies we used were diesel driven, which caused us quite some problems. Chia managed to break down two buggies, and Ronald drove through a deep puddle and lost the power on his buggy.

The golf was very good and Bernhard played the game of his life. He finished first with 39 points! He also had the lowest gross score of 85 strokes. The runner-up for the day was Diederik with 32 points.

During a good lunch at the club, we welcomed Diederik as a new member, having just played his fifth game for the Loose Cannons.

Evening dinner was in the Pampas restaurant on the 41st floor of the hotel tower. Pampas, our new sponsor, welcomed us in a very nice setting, sitting outside after we waited for a small rain shower to finish. Plenty of drinks and good food resulted in a late evening.

AYER KEROH REPORT-06-12-2022

Cannon’s

The Tuesday game was at Ayer Keroh. Chia, Hans, and our local hero, Mike, joined us, so we played with three 3-balls. We played Governor and Tunku, two completely different, and tough (!) nine holes. The last hole on the Tunku nine is 596 meters from the white tees! Most of us struggled to get decent scores. Ricardo had the lowest score with 89 strokes and Chia won with 31 points. These results showed how difficult the course is.

Nevertheless, we enjoyed the game and the company followed by lunch at the club. During lunch, we sang for Jan and Mike, both celebrating their birthdays, with Mike on the day itself!! After lunch, we went to the hotel to get some rest. Hotel The Shore is a decent hotel, very well located in the center of Melaka at easy walking distance.

Evening dinner was in The Curly Tail, a restaurant we knew from before. A separate room with good food and beer and wine made us very happy.

KOTA SERIEMAS REPORT-29-11-2022

Cannon’s

With 3 flights, 2 3-balls, and 1 full flight, we teed off nicely in time at Kota Seriemas. We started with nice cool weather, and no sun, but it turned out different later on the course because the sun came out in full force. That changed later with more clouds coming and we got rain after the game when we were driving to the restaurant.

The course, as always, was good with the first nine easier than the back nine. No comments on the greens, with some pin positions, very dangerously tucked away in the corner of the green. Some of the fairways had been under attack from wild boars (??), but that was not hampering us.

We had a very good lunch with only 5 of us in East of Highway, where we found that the winner was Roland Steiner with 94 for 35 points, followed by WL Chia with a nice 95 for 32 points, and in third place Bernhard Romahn and Bent Serritslev both with 30 points. With these results, Ricardo Castro won the monthly competition with 74 points, beating Josef Winter also with 74 but Ricardo had a higher score in one of the best 2 games (39) and Roland Steiner stays in third place with 69 points (nice number :-))). For the LCOTY Ricardo increased his lead now with 172 points, Iain Wise took over the second place with 59 points followed closely in third place by Bernhard with 57 points, and not too far David Cheung with 55 points, so a good fight with 4 players in contention for the top three places.

Next week’s game will be in Melaka as part of our away days.

KGSAAS REPORT-22-11-2022

Cannon’s

It was nice playing again KGSAAS even with the amount of rain in the last 2 weeks, we took the risk, and actually, it was not so bad, with a few fairways soggy but overall playable. We played President and Alam nines at a good pace as the course was very empty. Charlie Chow was playing his first game with us (thank you Diederik) and he got a sleeve of LC balls as a welcome gift. Diederik played his second game and he is looking forward to next week’s game and the Melaka tour to complete his degree. The winner today was Josef Winter with 88 for 36 points followed by Ricardo Castro with 81 (lowest score) for 35 points and in third place was Martin Belderink (just back from Holand) with 99 for 32 points. With these results, the monthly competition saw Ricardo catching on the top of the table with the same 74 points Josef Winter, and right behind Iain and Bernhard with 68 points so some to play next week.

Cheers
