Results – Perangsang Templer – 11th November 2014

Report

An excellent turnout of 24 players this week to what may be our last time to play Perangsang Templer as it will most likely close shortly. Weather was good and the course conditions were good apart from a few greens which were being sanded and cored. We got off on split tee boxes so we all finished by around 1pm and then 18 of us re-convened at Tang Dynasty Restaurant for a good lunch kindly ordered by Andrew Robinson. Drinks were generously sponsored by Jeff Pearce who was celebrating his 100th game with Loose Cannons. Jeff also kindly donated some sleeves of golf balls which he gave out for various “prizes” over lunch. Thank you Jeff for your generosity.
Ray Funnell using his new right-handed putting technique has improved his performance …. just wondering when he will throw away all of his left-handed clubs and play everything right-handed!
Richard Moss sporting his new handicap of 33 went from the “high” of the recent Batam Away win to bottom place today on 21 points – winning a sleeve of balls from Jeff Pearce for this fine effort.
Welcome again to our new players; Peter Barker and Rob Russell and a guest of Geoff McLawas, Henning Therkelsen.

Results
Surprisingly no one played under handicap today and the winner who played exactly to handicap with 36 points was Stuart Taylor. Joint runner ups on 35 points were Jeff Pearce and Iain Wise. Full results tabulated below:

Results – Tasik Puteri – 4th November 2014

With the main group of Cannons on tour this week to Batam, a small group of non tourists assembled for game at Tasik Puteri. We played the Putera & Tasik 9’s in that order which meant that the second 9 was rather warm! The course was in good condition but much dryer than expected; especially the greens which were hard and quite fast. Teeing off at just after 8am we made good progress and the last flight was back at 12:20pm. 8 of us then reassembled at the usual M&M place for an excellent lunch washed down with many bottles of the amber nectar, all for RM290.

The damage. Collected RM1100. G/F & Caddies RM1062. Winners Prize RM50. Lunch RM290. Lunch collection RM320. Balance in hand RM18.

The winner was Peter Barker with an excellent gross 80 (37 back 9) and 37 points.

Results – Batam Away – Tering Bay – 4th November 2014

Report

The last day of the 3 day Batam Away was played at Tering Bay which was located very close to the Palm Springs course we played on Day 2. There were now 9 of us as Martin Walsh had left that morning to return to Singapore by ferry to catch a flight to Australia ….. noted however that he left the hotel without paying for the room and had to sheepishly call Ray Funnell from the ferry terminal to sort out this small issue!

Tering Bay Golf Club was a little jaded in comparison to Palm Springs but the course was very good with excellent and rather fast greens. We headed out at around 10:30am and the 3 flights were completed by around 3pm or so. Drinks and some snacks were enjoyed on the terrace before heading off for a seafood restaurant close-by for dinner. The restaurant was not the one as recommended by Jeff Pearce but obviously some relative or friend of the bus driver … however the food was fresh and they had cold beer so we all enjoyed a good dinner right by the sea.

Results

It was Stuart Taylor who won on this last day with an excellent personal best gross of 77 and 45 points with Bernard Romahn in second place with 40 points on count back from Andrew Robinson also on 40 points. Stuart won 2 sleeves of balls and Bernard got one sleeve of balls. Full results from Day 3 are below:

The overall winner of the 3 day Batam Away competition was Richard Moss with a total of 115 points who had led from Day 1 and with a substantial lead after 2 days it was going to be difficult to catch him. Second was Andrew Robinson with 109 points. Richard Moss was presented with an engraved winners tankard kindly donated by Glenn Wombwell. Jeff Pearce was presented with a consolation sleeve of balls for having the lowest total points for the 3 days. The final 3 day results are tabulated below :

Results – Batam Away – Palm Springs – 3rd November 2014

Report

The second day of the Loose Canons Batam Away trip was held at Palm Springs Golf Course. There was a large competition (Nongsa Cup) being held at the club but we got off on the Resort 9 at around 10:30am and then crossed over to the Palm Course by which time most of the Nongsa Cup competitors were finished.

The Resort 9 course was very pleasant and well maintained but the Palm Course was really very good – challenging holes with some incredible views. Greens on the Palm were very quick and with the slopes and pin positions made this a difficult 9.

We finished by around 3:30 pm to 4pm and had drinks on the verandah prior to taking the bus back to the hotel.

Results

Richard Moss played yet another excellent round (44 points) and increased his lead on the field winning again the first prize (2 sleeves of balls) with Martin Walsh (42 points) taking the second prize of 1 sleeve of balls. Full results below for the day :

Current positions after Day 1 and Day 2 are as follows:

Results – Batam Away – Batam Hills – 2nd November 2014

Report

10 Loose Cannons headed to Batam, Indonesia on Sunday 2nd November for a 3 day away trip, flying from Subang airport on Firefly. On arrival in Batam we were met by our arranged driver who then took us in a 24 seater bus to the first golf course – Batam Hills. We had time for some lunch prior to the game and teed off at around 1pm. Weather conditions were hot and humid and the course was in good condition with the exception of some greens which had been hollow tined and sanded.

We all finished by around 5pm and then had post-game drinks at the club with the announcement of the results prior to taking the bus into Nagoya to the Harmoni Hotel.

Results

It was the high handicappers who dominated the field today with the top two places being contested closely with 38 points – it was Richard Moss who won on the day on count back from Barry Cousins also with 38 points. The winner received 2 sleeves of balls and the runner up one sleeve of balls. Full results below :

Results – Staffield Golf & Country Resort – 28th October 2014

Report

The Trophy Game for the month of November was held at Staffield Golf & Country Club. We had 19 players (5 flights) starting from split tee boxes on the North and Western 9’s. Weather was excellent and the course was in good shape. The greens on our first 9 holes (Western) were however very bumpy having just been cored and not properly rolled – the greens on the Northern 9 were better albeit sandy.

After the game most of us returned to the excellent Restoran East of the Highway for a sumptuous (and over-ordered) lunch care of Messrs Robinson and Moss

Results

Scores were very good as is usual at this venue and more than half the field turned in a card with a score equal to or higher than their handicap. We had 3 people sharing best gross score of 79 this week (Geoff McLaws, Andrew Chez and Paul Geddes) but it was Paul Geddes who won this week picking up the November trophy with an excellent (and best performance to date in Malaysia) of 79 gross and 43 points – well done Paul. Runner up also with an excellent 41 points and gross of 90 was Allan McNicoll. Full scores are tabulated below.

Results – Danau Golf Club – 21st October 2014

Report

It’s been at least 4 years since Cannons played Danau so we returned with the promise of renovated greens via information from Geoff Parslow. This course has always been a tough and challenging course with some rather interesting holes. We had a tee time of 8:00am but it was a slow start as our 5 flights were all off one tee box and there were players in front … and it was slow going after that waiting on almost every hole making it a 5 hour round.

The course was good and although the greens were good they were soft and spongy. Putting on the sloping greens against the grain was also something of a a challenge.

We eventually finished about 1:45 and just before the rain came luckily. Lunch was at the Restoran East of the Highway and we made it there just before the kitchen closed. The food here was excellent other than the yam basket with rather smelly squid …. note that we should not order this again.

Results

Winner of the day with an excellent 40 points (gross of 86) was Tony Morris, with Geoff McLaws runner up some 7 points behind with 33 points and the best gross of the day at 83. As well as the RM50 pot Tony Morris won a free 4-flight voucher for Danau which had been kindly donated by the golf club manager who Ted and Geoff Parslow know well.

We had one non finisher, Andrew Chez, who had to leave 2 holes from the finish. We also had a couple of players who didn’t submit scores so it is important to make sure that every player records their score and submits it otherwise it will not be recorded. If you are not going to the post game lunch please make sure that you hand in the scores to someone from your flight who is.

Results – Impian Golf Club – Loose Cannons vs LEGS – 14th October 2014

Report

This was the biannual challenge between Loose Cannons and LEGS and the ladies hosted this game at their home club of Impian Golf Club. We had a perfect number of 18 a side making a convenient 9 flights for a shot-gun start on holes 10 through 18.

Everyone showed up promptly and we managed to avoid a delay in the registration with the club agreeing for us to pay later which was good. Buggies and caddies were all ready so we all got off to a sharp start at just before 8:30am.

The weather was good albeit a little humid and sticky. The course was in good condition although some of the greens had been scarified making it rather uneven and unpredictable in those areas.

We all got finished by 12:30pm or so and sat down for an arranged lunch at the club before the final results were announced.

Many thanks to all the people who helped organise this match and to all the participants who made this a most successful day out.

Results

The past 3 matches have been very close with two matches drawn and one match won by the ladies ….  making them one up overall to date.

Today the men came good and won 6 games with the ladies winning 3 games …. so a convincing overall win for Loose Cannons – well done to all the Loose Cannons players for a great result.

This means that we are now tied in the overall score to date. Loose Cannons look forward to arranging the next game around April time frame next year and continue the good work that we demonstrated today!

There were prizes for the best Stableford score for the ladies pairs and the mens pairs. Winner for the ladies were Yvonne Gately and Meret Dahl with a best Stableford score of 51 points, and winner for the best men’s pair score went to Stuart Taylor and Barry Cousins with a score of 49 points.

Full results are tabulated below.

Results – Bangi Golf Club – 7th October 2014

Report

We had 16 Cannons for today’s game at Bangi and today we had everyone at the club by 7:30, we were registered and paid by 7:35 and in the buggies and off to the tee box by 7:45 …. an all time record.

Weather was hazy and rather humid making it very sticky. Course was in good shape and the greens were very quick and rather unpredictable making for many of us taking far too many putts. The course was quiet and we got round by 12:15pm.

Barry Cousins won the most inventive attire award of the day …. managing to tailor his golf shorts apparently from the canvas of an old deck chair!

Stuart Taylor won the most bizarre shot of the day award with a tee shot off the 3rd hole (Par 5) on the Kajang Course which headed straight for a large tree on the left (Stuart’s attempt to cut the corner) …. with a large thud all of us assumed it was lost in the jungle …. but a good 4-5 seconds later as the next person was moving to the tee box the ball landed about 6 feet behind us …. having rebounded from the tree some 100m away. Stuart then proceeded to take a 3-wood to the lucky ball, hit his second over the trees onto the fairway round the corner and eventually bogeyed the hole!!

Results

There were some good scores today on this rather short course with a few players in the 40’s. The winner however with a magnificent round of 99 and 45 Stableford points was Richard Moss once again showing that our highest handicap golfer in the group can win! Well done Richard. Runner up was Andrew Robinson with a mere 44 points. Best gross of the day was Andrew Chez with a round of 80, including one eagle and a couple of birdies. He did however completely #%$#@ up his Stableford score …. declaring 40 points …. reduced to the correct figure of 36 points by the Convenor.

Results – Kinrara Golf Club – 30th September 2014

Report

It was a hazy morning as 20 Loose Cannons players showed up at the Kinrara Golf Club for the September Trophy game. Course conditions although a tad soggy in parts due to the recent rain was generally good. The greens were in good shape other than one or two which had been hollow tined.

Our 5 flights got off sharp before 8am from two split tee boxes and most were beck by 12:30 or so.

Most of the players drove back and had lunch at the Selangor Club Sport’s Annexe with Andrew Robinson ordering a mountain of pizzas, fries … and of course much liquid amber.

Results

Mike Williams was the September Trophy winner with a gross of 84 and 39 Stableford points – congratulations! Second was Mike Smith with 37 points (94 gross). Best gross of the day was Geoff Parslow with 81. Full results below.
