Report

Cannons all.
Staffield Country Resort was in super condition for today’s game and with dry weather throughout, (the first spots of rain started to fall as the last flight walked off the 18th) it was a real pleasure to play this wonderful track again.

We were 16 until 10:30 last night when Geoff Parslow pulled out…..some emergency that Ted would explain to me. More on this later. Then at 6 o’clock this morning Barry Cousins called me to say he had twisted his knee putting his clubs in the car. Old age is the pits isn’t it? So 14 LC’s teed it up promptly at 8 o’clock behind what appeared to be a rather slow 4 ball with Andrew muttering that this had the makings of a 5 hour job.

Berjaya; the owners of Staffield, continue to carry out long overdue major maintenance of this once lovely course and the playing surface was excellent, particularly the greens which were quick and true and a real pleasure to put on. After so much rain in recent days the drainage improvements that they have undertaken are clearly working as no soft patches were encountered. The bunkers are currently undergoing a complete work over; those that are completed were good but there were several that were in progress and not in play.
We played the Northern and Southern 9’s and with two 3 balls leading the way we were all round in just over 4 hours so not the protracted game that Andrew had feared. There was a small competition competing for space but they didn’t affect our game at all. Good management by the starter.

The winner was Mike Smith with 42 points OCB from runner-up was Aftab Ahmad.
The lowest gross was 79 by Geoff McLaws who also had the longest drive, (see below) and the most golf was played by Allan McNicoll, Glen Wombwell and Stuart Taylor all with 109.
Mike Smith is cut 6 strokes and Aftab 1 stroke.

10 of us drove the 5 mins to Mantin for lunch at the usual place and excellent it was too. We would have been 11 but Geoff McLaws missed the place, drove 11km past, turned around and missed it coming back having said he ‘knew’ where the place was, then found himself on the way to Nilai Springs, turned around and started back before declaring himself “completely f….g lost” and abandoning the expedition, heading home with the aid of his GPS. For this Geoff picks up the coveted honour of “Longest Drive”. Editor’s note: Barry Cousins should get an award for the “shortest drive” of the day!

While Allan, Glen and Stuart all racked up 109 strokes on the course this pales into insignificance with the 110 clocked up by Geoff Parslow……..days that is, over stayed on his visa! Hence his late withdrawal since he had more pressing matters to attend to with Immigration this morning. Ted will let us know if the deportation holding cells allow visitors.
It’s also worth mentioning that John Laidley couldn’t remember whether he had played Staffield before or not!!! Oh dear. What with Barry’s knee and Johns memory what are we coming to?

Results for Staffield Tuesday 12th June 2012

15 LC’s enjoyed Staffield Tuesday, the course being in very good condition and we played in superb weather. Staffield remains one of the best tracks we play and while it stays reasonably priced we will continue to use it.

The winner was Jeff Pearce with 43 points and the runner-up was Bernhard Romahn with 42 points. The lowest gross was 78 by Joe Zorich and the most golf was played by Alan Holgate with 113.
Jeff is cut 7 strokes and Bernhard 1 stroke.

12 of us went to the usual place in Mantin for lunch where the grub was good, washed down with plenty of cold beer by those of us who still can. Joe Zorich was celebrating his birthday and playing his last game with us this trip before he heads back to Seattle. He had forgotten the Champagne though! Bon voyage Joe. See you next time.

There was lots of lively chat as well as the ongoing complaint from Bernhard who can’t see the ‘logic’ in the handicapping system. There doesn’t have to be LOGIC in golf society handicapping Bernhard. Like the Rules of Golf, nobody claims that they are fair, just punishing. Erol moaned about his handicap (again) but he is suffering from selective memory loss poor sod.

For the benefit of Erol (and everyone else) I use the Loose Cannons Handicap Manager which is a piece of USGA approved software for calculating handicaps. This is updated with every gross score (adjusted) of every game played with Cannons and so it’s accurate.

Results – Staffield Golf Resort – 15th May 2012

Cannons all,
Staffield was in superb condition, especially the greens which were running true and reasonably fast. This really is a gem of a golf course and with the current mid week package, very affordable. We shall return……..soon.
12 golfers had registered but a last minute withdrawal due to illness meant that only 11 LC’s teed off. This was a bit of a bummer as I had bumped John Preston out at 6 o’clock yesterday evening. Sorry about that John. And with Barry straining his back with his first drive of the morning we were down to 10 after one hole. As most of us are getting older we should warm up before teeing up.

The weather was glorious and the course was not busy so everyone was round in under 4 hours.Whether it was the course or the weather or both I don’t know, but some very good scores were recorded. Of note were 5 birdies each to the 2 Geoff’s; Parslow & McLaws.
The winner was Mark Baker with 45 points and the R/Up was Geoff Parslow with 44 points. The lowest gross was 75 by Geoff Parslow and the most golf played was 109 by our returning member Bernhard Romain.
Mark is cut 9 strokes and Geoff 1 stroke.

The full results can be found in the attachment where the 2 Geoffs will note that their USGA handicap has tumbled down to 9 & 6 respectively resulting in Capped Handicaps of 12 for McLaws and 9 for Parslow. So you see Geoff P, having “never ever played off a double digit handicap in my life” didn’t last long. ‘Handicap Master’ took care of that.

After the game all 10 survivors retired to Mantin to the usual Chinese and enjoyed some excellent grub washed down with an unusually large amount of the amber nectar amid some good banter. Mark generously chucked his winnings into the kitty but we still had to cough up an extra RM20 each. Having completed the whip round Bernhard then handed me RM200 as his contribution. Now I’m not sure if this was a spontaneous generous gesture to mark his return to the LC’s after several months absence or whether it was intended to influence my reporting of the mornings golf. You will remember that I said “some very good scores were recorded”!!! Well, that was true BUT not everyone scored well. Bernhard shot 40 & 60 for 17 points; 14 of which were on his front 9. So there you go Bernhard, bribery will get you nowhere. But thanks again for your generosity. The money has gone into the LC coffers which now stand at RM1280. I feel a good Christmas Lunch coming on.

Results – Staffield Golf Resort – 30th January 2012

Cannons all,
Staffield was in very good condition and with pleasant weather it was a pleasure to be playing there again. It’s still one of the best tracks in my opinion and well worth the extra 10 mins travel time.
We had 15 Cannons and a guest; Mike Low, Ray Funnell’s guest is a member at Staffield and generously donated a voucher for 1 free flight. Thanks Mike. Cannons hope to see you again. We also had a rare visit from Mike Han who played off the wrong handicap. This will be corrected for his next appearance.
This was the Trophy Game for January and some very good scores were returned; 3 players with 40 points. But with the bonus points the winner was Hans Berger with 39 points on the day plus 4 bonus points for a total of 43 points. The R/U ocb with 40 + 1 was Geoff Parslow. The lowest gross of the day was Geoff’s 77 and the most golf was played by Alan.
Hans is cut 4 strokes and Geoff 1 stroke.
The full results and adjusted handicaps can be found in the attachment.
M&M was at the Sheng Gee Restoran in Mantin and very good it too. 12 of us enjoyed the meal and thanks to Mike Low’s donation we had a considerable surplus.

Results – Staffield Golf Resort – 18th October 2011

Cannons all.
14 Cannons turned out on Tuesday at Staffield. Most of us had not played there for some while and were pleased to find the course in excellent condition with true greens. For me, Staffield remains one of the best courses in the country.
The winner with a fine 42 points was Barry Cousins and the R/U OCB was Erol Akinci with 40 points from Sigi. The lowest gross was Sigi’s 85 and the most golf was played by Dick Stauffer with 114. Barry is cut 6 strokes and Erol the mandatory 1 stroke.

11 of us went to Mantin for M&M and very good it was too. A good morning was had by all.

Results – Staffield Golf Resort – 12th April 2011

As usual Staffield was in a very good condition and greens were very fast. Almost all bunkers were not playable due to recent rains which washed away all the sand but fairways were very playable and dry.
Registered 8 players and Paul Jeyaraj and two of his guests turned up. Tom Holmes played an excellent first nine and had 23 points but his game totally collapsed during second nine so his 27 handicap was no help.
Hans Berger had no such problems and finished by 23 + 23 . Hans was a comfortable winner by 85 – 46 and Bernard runner up with 91 – 41. So Hans goes down by 10 to 13 hcp to reflect his good golfing skills. Bernard down by 1 (or 5 if you want to punish him more).
Paul Jeyaraj 93 -37
Erol Akinci 101 – 29
Bernard Rohman 91 – 41
Hans Berger 85 – 46
John Laidley 85 – 31
Julian Pervis 93 – 37
Ray Funnell 106 – 27
Tom Holmes 101 – 34
Rein  Li Tan 92 – 40
Andrew (guest) 100 – 32
David (guest) 111 – 21
(both guests played with 24 hcp)
