Loose Cannons Xmas Lunch – Coliseum Cafe – 15th December 2017

IMG_6594We held our traditional Loose Cannons Xmas Lunch at the usual venue of the Coliseum Cafe on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in KL on Friday 15th December. As per normal procedure we all met in the bar for pre-lunch drinks and had the extra touch of some santa hats to wear for the occassion. Everyone brought a bottle of wine and our Chief Somelier Richard Moss inspected these bottles and decided on which bottle was the worst one; in this case it was the one brought by Peter McGowan and he was fined the normal RM50.

We adjourned to the rear restaurant where our table awaited us and the usual festivities ensued after a welcome address by our Convenor, Hans Berger, and a toast to absent friends, Murray Preston, Gordon Wingate and Andre Holm.

During the lunch of prawn cocktail, roast turkey, beef pie and apple pie with ice cream everyone participated by telling a joke or singing a song.

The slideshow of photos below sums up the day.

Results – Nilai Springs Golf & Country Club – 12th December 2017

IMG_6558_LUM

Conditions at Nilai Springs Golf & Country Club were good as 23 players headed off on the Island and Pines nines this morning at just after 8:00am. The course was in good condition but as usual the upturned concave greens on the Island nine caught out many players. We finished by around 1pm and most of us stayed for lunch at the club and the prize ceremony.

Results – Bukit Kemuning – 5th December 2017

IMG_6458

We had 5 full flights today at Bukit Kemuning Golf & Country Club. We got off sharply at 8:00am from two tee boxes under good weather conditions. The course was in fair condition but there were quite a few bare patches on the fairways (as indicated by a notice in our buggies) and also some re-turfed areas around some of the greens which were GUR. The greens were also a little patchy and bumpy.

After the game 16 of us took lunch at the New O&S Seafood Restaurant in Kota Kemuning with some excellent food pre-ordered by Barry Cousins.

Results

The winner this week was Bernard Romahn with an excellent round of 79 for 41 points. Joint 2nd place was Bernie Schobert with 82 for 40 points and Aftab Ahmad with 91 for 40 points. Best gross of the day Was Niall Murray with a 78 and most golf went to David Evans with a 108. Full results below:

Results – Staffield Country Resort – 28th November 2017

IMG_6368

The monthly medal for November was held at Staffield Country Resort with a total of 28 players attending. We all got off smoothly on the North and South nines at 8:00am. Weather was overcast and cool making it a pleasant morning and with the usual good course conditions was a joy to play.

We had lunch at the club post game which was good but the beer a tad on the expensive side.

Results

The winner of the November Trophy was Geoff McLaws with a score of 77 for 38 points on countback from Siegmund Maeirbrugger who had 89 for 38 points.

This is a corrected results after reviewing the handicaps and finding that an incorrect handicap of 25 had been used initially for ReinLi Tan when he was declared the winner after the game. His handicap should have been 23.

I managed to contact Geoff McLaws to tell him the changed result and as chance would have it he was having a drink with ReinLi so they managed to do a handover of the trophy from ReinLi to Geoff. ReinLi told me he had alread spent the RM50 on beer. The pictures below tells all!!

The corrected final results table is as below:

Screen Shot 2017-11-28 at 6.20.31 PMJoint third place were ReinLi Tan, Martin Walsh, Stuart Taylor and Brian Buckley, all on 37 points.

Best gross of the day was Geoff McLaws with 77.

Results – Bukit Unggul Country Club – 21 Nov 2017

IMG_6305

We had 20 players today for the weekly Loose Cannons game at Bukit Unggul … good turnout perhaps as Tony Morris was celebrating his 400th game with a large drinks contribution at the after game lunch …. it certainly wasn’t because of the quality of the course. I know I have criticised Bukit Unggul before …. so let me continue …..

Two words ….. Goat Track …..

Screen Shot 2017-11-21 at 4.49.40 PM.jpg

The course was in very poor shape with shocking greens which had been recently hollowtined and sanded, the usual messy fairways, bare tee boxes and numerous areas dug up and ruined by wild pigs. There seems to be no attempt by the golf course management to address even the simplest of issues with large holes in the course as shown below …..

IMG_6304

as well as the very basic maintenance for the tee areas …..

IMG_6310

and of course the greens were a complete shambles covered with sand and with numerous bumps and holes …..

IMG_6315

Even the holes were completely messed up …. poorly cut with uneven, bare, raggedy edges.

IMG_6309

On Hole No 12 the complete green had been dug up with only a small temporary green in front (apparently!) …. of course our group didn’t even spot the temporary green as the childish clowns in the flight in front (Cousins/Wise/Robinson/Morris) had moved the flag onto the dug up original green … thanks lads …. very sporting! We couldn’t even spot the temporary green without the flag.

IMG_6298IMG_6299

After the game we had a good lunch at East of Highway Restaurant with 16 players attending and much cold beer flowing.

Many thanks to the kind contributions into the lunch/drinks pot from Tony Morris (celebrating his 400th game with Loose Cannons) and from Ray Funnell celebrating his birthday.

Results

The winner today was Charles Blanchet with an excellent score of for 86 for 41 points. Runner up was Stan Constantinides with 89 for 39. Best gross was Charles Blanchet with his 86. Full scores below:

Results – Tasik Puteri – 14th November 2017

IMG_6229

After some early morning light rain it was a cool morning for our 5 flights teeing off on the Puteri and Putera nines at Tasik Puteri. The course was in good shape but unfortunately the greens on Puteri had recently been hollowtined and were slow and bumpy making for quite a few 3 putts from our players.

We welcomed back Andrew Robinson to the group after his 7 month sabatical to recover from his broken leg. We also saw the return of an old face with Peter Barker joining us again after a 2 year hiatus.

After the game we had lunch at the club which was as usual disappointing with poor food and bad service. The general consensus from most players is that we should be using the Chin Heong Chinese Restaurant closeby to the club which offers much better quality and value …. a note for future games here.

Results

Some good scores today which is normal for this course. The winner today with an excellent round of 77 for 42 points was Paul Geddes. Runner up was Martin Belderink with 89 for 41 points. Brian Stubbs after a few recent disappointing games came back with a great 40 points but only enough to get 3rd place. Best gross was Paul Geddes with his 77. A summary of all the scores are below:

Results – Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Resort – 7th November 2017

IMG_6142

With heavy rain all night and into the morning it was going to be a delayed start at Bukit Jalil today … but we did get off eventually after 9:00 am with all 5 flights off tee box 10. Our Convenor Hans could not play today due to back injury but was kind enough to be there to check us all in and then be there at the end for the lunch and results.

The course was in good condition and apart from the occassional bunker filled with water was in great shape. Course maintanance was ongoing as we played with staff cleaning up bunkers, blowing leaves with those noisy leaf blowers and even cutting new holes on the greens (albeit doing so between our flights meaning that the last flight played a different hole!)

We got round the 18 holes in reasonable time and all had lunch at the golfers terrace after the game. We had Sigi abandon playing before we even began because of the delayed start so we were down to 18 players. Bernard decided to abandon his game before the end of the round, probably as he was having a bad day so he was a No Return!!

Results

We welcomed back Charles Blanchet to the group after a 6 month break back in France … the plentiful wine and good cheese must have done him good as he came back to win today with 93 for 35 points. Runner up was Paul Geddes and Stuart Taylor both on 33 points. Best gross was Paul Geddes with an 86 and most gross was by Peter May with a 116. Full results below:

Results – KGSAAS – 31st October 2017

IMG_6042

The Monthly Trophy game for October was held at KGSAAS with 20 players entered. We all got off on the Sultan and Alam Shah nines at around 8:00am and after some very heavy early morning rain in KL it was cool and overcast making it very pleasant to play.

We welcomed first time guest Bert Beekes (guest of Eric Van Donselaar) who joined us this morning.

Our 3rd flight off Sultan were held up briefly as Julien Hodson-Walker was not allowed to play in his cargo shorts and had to quickly return to the pro shop to purchase some acceptable golf shorts. He returned in some lurid pink shorts so along with Sigi in his brilliant shiny green (boxing) shorts made for a colourful flight indeed!

The course was in good condition although greens were somewhat erratic; some ok and some quite slow. It was good to see some ongoing maintanance around the course with some serious tree felling operations which made the course look tidier.

Results

The winner of the October Monthly Trophy was Ray Funnell with 100 for 38 with Bernard Romahn and Sigi Maierbrugger in tied second place on 36 points. Best gross was Geoff McLaws with an 84. Full results below:

Results – Bangi Golf Resort – 24th Oct 2017

IMG_5961There were 23 players today at Bangi Golf Resort and after a quick registration we were off at 8:00am from 2 tee boxes on the Kajang and Putrajaya nines. Already by early morning the sun was out and it was soon very warm and humid. We did however get some respite later when we had a 10 minute rain shower.

The course was in reasonable condition and playing from the blue tees this time most players found this much more enjoyable.

Welcome to our new guest who joined us today – Alan Feasby invited by David Savage.

After the game we had lunch at our favourite East of Highway Restaurant.

Results

Our winner this week with a very good 96 for 40 points was Allan Wright. We had two players tied for 2nd place; Martin Belderink with 92 for 38 and David Savage with 87 for 38. Best gross was shared between Mike Williams and Paul Geddes, both with 85 and most golf was won by Brian Stubbs with a 115, although it must be said that our Convenor, Hans Berger did not finish because of injury …. so perhaps he may have had most golf!! Results – Nilai Springs – 17th Oct 2017

IMG_5869

There were 12 players confirmed for today’s game at Nilai Springs but due to a last minute pull out we only had 11.

We played the Mango and Island 9’s and made good time with no holdups all the way round. On the first 9 holes (Mango) the greens had not been cut and were very slow …. but the back 9 (Island) the greens were much much faster causing a big change in putting tactics for everyone.

Weather was good and we were all finished by just after 12 noon. Lunch was at the clubhouse verandah. We had to send back the initial two jugs of beer which were mildly cold … and exchanged these for some nice cold Carlsberg bottles on ice. Luckily these were taken off the bill.

Results

No outstanding scores today – the winner was Siegmund Maeirbrugger with a 91 for 36. Runners up were Aftab Ahamd and Eric van Donselaar both with 35 points. Best gross was shared between Siegmund Maeirbrugger, Martin Walsh and Bernard Romahn, all with 91. Full results below:
