2 Day Competiton – Ayer Keroh & Tiara Melaka – 9th & 10th April

Ayer Keroh – 9th April

Report

All arrived on time at Ayer Keroh and we teed off at 1015 hrs. Pleasant conditions, tree lined course, and even crocodiles basking on the lake banks.!!   But the course is getting a little tired, with the second 9 also having very heavily sanded greens, which made putting a bit of a lottery. The scores reflected the challenges of the course on the day.

All participants bought prizes along to be distributed during the 2 days of the competition. Handicaps for the competition had been levelled and assessed, hopefully to give all a chance.

Winner on the day was Bernard ocb from Kevin with 89 for 35 points, (Bottle of wine). 6th place Andrew 104, 27 points (bottle of wine) and 10th place was the very heavily favoured Ray , who as a result, scored 121 for 15 points….(box of balls).

Dinner – 9th April

For the evening’s frivolities, Andrew, who had meticulously planned the evening’s cuisine, deftly directed everyone to the planned restaurant, only to discover that the establishment did not allow or serve alcohol…!!  Very quickly we moved onto alternative location, where a good evening was had by all. Andrew was quickly renamed Nyonya Robinson” which I’m sure will stick for some time to come.

Andrew Robinson recommended the best Nyonya restaurant in Melaka for dinner …. unfortunately it was dry and didn’t even allow us to consume our own wine
Dejected Loose Cannon’s at the Amy Heritage Nyonya Restaurant realising there was no alcohol! By this stage Mr Robinson’s face was ashen gray at the prospect that he couldn’t consume his wine.

Tiara Melaka – 10th April

Tiara Melaka was in great shape – our golf not so

Report

Teed off at 1015 hrs at Tiara, for the second day of the competition. The course was in excellent condition, the greens were as usual challenging, and everyone enjoyed their day’s golf, on an easier course. Scores were much better.

The leaders, after the first day, in the third flight, were on the 18th with one of three possible winners. Kevin, as usual creeping quietly up, with Hans leading by 3 points, from Bernard. Then the drama…( see pic). Hans’s drive lodged between 2 trees, took a penalty shot, and then proceeded to put his next shot into the greenside bunker…and….

The winner on the day .. Bernard 84 for 39 points, (bottle of wine), Ray was 6th (bottle of wine), with Erol 10 th (bottle of wine). Ted P also had 84 which included 3 birdies, 5 pars and rather too many 3 and 4 putts…!!

Loose Cannons Golf Day – Orna – 11th April

Report

Normal Cannons game, handicaps and rules played at Orna GC. As at Ayer Keroh, the course and clubhouse were looking a little tired. The course was busy with touring Koreans, but we managed to tee off slightly early, but without the booked caddies. Bernard was suffering from the previous evening’s excesses and as a result gave everyone else a chance…

Jeff who has been vociferously complaining about his high handicap, during recent weeks, has at last corrected it….!! An excellent round of 91 for 48 points, resulted in a cut of 12, beating Andrew who had a 95 for 41 points . Cut 1.

We were lucky with the weather for all 3 days. Everyone got on well together, all returned home safely , and a good time I believe was had by all.

Results – Bukit Unggul Country Resort – 2 April 2013

Report

Bukit Unggul is a regular course for many LC’s as it used for Friday and Sunday golf groups where some of the LC also play, come sun come rainy season one sort of feels comfortable going there, it’s a great place.

Thirteen of us today and today’s winner both gross and points was the man from Wales David Hughes 83/41 cut five, second Kevin Wiggins 40 cut one and most golf today had Ian Dickson 127.

Was puzzled by the sign at the 8th tee …. then we saw the damage done to the 8th green in picture below

Results – Perangsang Templer – 26th March 2013

13 players at Perangsang for the March Trophy game. We welcomed a new player, Ian Dickson, who will hopefully become a regular.

After the very heavy overnight rain, several of the bunkers were full of water and no run was apparent on the fairways. Weather was very pleasant with a slight breeze. The scores, were generally better than expected, bearing in mind the wet conditions. Lowest gross was by Geoff Mclaws with 81 just beating Bernard with a 82. The winner , as predicted from the first

flight, was Hans Berger with 93 for 45 points, cut 9…Second was Bernard with 43 points cut only 1.

An excellent lunch followed at the Tang Dynasty , where much to Andrew’s delight the Jacobs Creek Merlot was only 49 RM per bottle. He considered buying all their stock…!!

Results – Staffield Country Resort – 19th March 2013

This was the milestone day, as we celebrated Andrew Robinson’s 300th game for the Cannons. We had 5 full flights, which unfortunately at the club’s request, all started from 1 st tee on the Southern course.
17 players plus R.Moss esq. and Dick Stauffer joined Andrew for lunch at the Annexe where a lonnnggg lunch was enjoyed by all. Andrew many, many thanks for your generousity with the lunch bill, and the sleeves of balls.
Now onto the golf….
Staffield was in good condition but several fairways, primarily on the Northern 9, had been effected by yesterday’s storm, with 20 trees down and some of the fairways covered with leaves and branches. The club were working hard to start to clear the debris. The greens were back to their usual excellent, true, fast condition.
Some excellent scores on the day, worth highlighting. John Laidley was back to his imperious best with a 78 for 39 points, which included a front nine to par….!! Bernard 80 for 44 points. Erol came second with 90 for 47 points. None of which reached the winner on the day, Aftab, 90 for 48 points. Well done. Shame you did not come to lunch as your winnings went into the pot, as is customary. Aftab cut 12, Erol cut only 1…..!!
Andrew’s prizes of sleeve of balls went to Erol, second, Dave Hughes, 13 th and Andre had 2 sleeves for the honour of bringing up the rear.

Next Game – Staffield Country Resort – 19th March 2013

5 flights have been booked at STAFFIELD COUNTRY RESORT for next Tuesday 19th. Tee off from 2 boxes at 0745 hrs. Please be at the course by 0720 hrs latest.  Costs will be 130 RM, and Caddies are at own expense. Please let Ray Funnell know if you wish to play.

This is a milestone day as we celebrate or commiserate, Andrew Robinson’s 300 th game for the Cannons. I expect a high turnout for this monumental occasion. We will be eating at the usual restaurant in Mantin.

Results – KRTU – 12th March 2012

Report

KRTU was in it’s usual excellent condition. The overnight rain reduced run, on the cut fairways, but the greens were as true, undulating and challenging as always. The scores reflected the challenging nature of the course, with only 6 players breaking the 100.

Using the TP book this is exceptional value and with everyone arriving punctually, we teed off on the booked time. As always the staff were friendly and helpful and a good day was had by all.

The winner on the day was the “in form man”… Stuart Taylor with an excellent 86 for 45 points. Cut 9. Second on a 3 way count back was Gordon Wingate, from Andrew and Hans, with 96 and 39 points. Gordon cut 1. Lowest gross was David Hughes with 85, getting his health and form back.
