Results – Loose Cannons vs LEGS – Staffield Country Resort – 18th October 2016

IMG_0233.jpg

Loose Cannons and LEGS have been challenging each other since April 2013 and this was the 7th game in the series held at Staffield Country Resort. We had 12 flights with 24 players from each side competing in a best ball Stableford competition.

After a slight delay due to quite a few ladies arriving late (some miscommunication on the tee-off time apparently) we all got off on the West Course at around 8:30am. The weather was wonderful and the course was in great shape making it a very good morning’s golf.

Most players completed the round by 1pm and we had a lunch set up in the clubhouse restaurant where the prize giving was done.

Results

In preparing the flights for today’s match we took all the players’ USGA handicaps, adjusted them all for the slope of the course with men 18 and below playing off the blue tees and those above 18 playing the white tees, and then adjusting the teams to try and match the combined handicaps which we did within one shot. These matched pairs worked very well resulting in some very close games and overall an extremely tight match.

The overall match was a draw with Loose Cannons winning 5 of the matches, LEGS winning 5 matches and two matches were drawn. So 6 points to each side for match No 7.

So after 7 matches there is still only 1 point separating the two teams with Loose Cannons with a total of 35 match points and LEGS having a total of 34 match points. We look forward to the next match in the series.

Full results and overall scores detailed below.

Results – Impian Golf & Country Club – 11th October 2016

img_0169

With an original 21 booked to play we had one last minute drop out resulting in 5 full flights and 20 players today at Impian Golf & Country Club. So with revised flights we got off from two tee boxes on a beautiful morning, although it did become a little steamy and humid later on. The course was in very good condition although the greens had just been sanded and were a little variable in their speed. Rate of play was good and we all finished by 12:30 and then we headed off to Fei Wai restaurant for lunch ….. well at least 11 of us did!

Results

Our winner this week was Allan Wright with 89 for 42 points (cut 6) and the runner up was Andrew Robinson with 97 for 40 points. Best gross was shared between Allan Wright and Stuart Taylor, both with 89. Full results below:

Results – Nilai Springs – 4th October 2016

It was a beautiful clear morning with 26 Loose Cannons players teeing off on the Mango & Pines 9’s of Nilai Springs Golf & Country Club. It is usually a challenge getting started at this club but luckily there were very few other players so we all got off on two boxes relatively efficiently.

Weather was wonderful and the course was in very good shape although some greens were a little on the bumpy side.

We finished by around 12:30pm and although we had planned to stay at the club for lunch and drinks they informed us they were “out of beer” so we quickly changed plans and headed to our reliable Restoran East of Highway for lunch and some much needed cold beers. Paul Geddes and Iain Wise were celebrating very recent birthdays so they kindly handles the refreshment bill making it an even more enjoyable lunch. Thank You to Paul and Iain.

Results

Some good scores today at Nilai Springs as is usually expected at this course. The winner was Stuart Taylor with 83 for 42 points on count back from Paul Geddes with 81 for 42 points (24 points on back 9 vs 20 points). 3rd place was shared between Glen Wombwell (96 for 41) and Allan Wright (91 for 41). Best gross of the day was Geoff McLaws with 78.

Results – Amverton Cove – 13th September 2016

img_9845

There were only 12 players this week to enjoy the delights of Amverton Cove Golf & Island Resort. We got off early on the back 9 just after 7:30am in front of a competition group that were also at the club and therefore managed to navigate round the course in fairly quick time. The course was in better condition than the last time we played so it is good to see the course returning to some of its former glory. There had been some recent rain so there were some wet patches around the course but the greens were generally very good although some seemed very slow compared to others.

After the game we had lunch at the nearby seafood restaurant as per usual where we managed a large choice of seafood washed down by many Tiger beers.

Results

The winner this week was Ricardo Castro with an excellent 84 for 44 points with runner up being Ted Parslow with an 84 for 40 points. Best gross was shared between Ricardo and Ted with their 84’s. Full results below:

IMG_9736

We had 5 full flights at Bukit Kemuning Golf & Country Resort today. At 8:00am we all got off smoothly from two tee boxes under overcast skies and cool weather. Conditions of the course were fair, the greens being rather bumpy and unpredictable in speed.

We were not held up at all during the round so were finished in 4 hours.

After the game we retired to the Mayflower Restaurant in Le Garden Hotel for an excellent lunch washed down with 32 bottles of beer plus an extra 4 for dessert!

Results

Some good scores today as expected at this course. The winner today was Robert Mulliss with a 99 for 44 points on count back from Jeff Pearce also with 44 points. Best gross of the day was Ted Parslow with an 82. Full results below:

Results – Staffield Golf & Country Resort – 30th August 2016

IMG_9701

The August Monthly Trophy Game was held at Staffield Golf & Country Club. We were delayed in starting today as there was heavy rain but we eventually got off at around 8:30am or so. However the rain persisted for the first 9 holes making it a bit of a slog dealing with sodden gloves and golf club grips. However by the back 9 the rain stopped making it more pleasant.

The course was in very good condition despite the rain and the greens really excellent. There were only a few small patches of water which we had to get relief from on the greens.

Due to the late start we decided to have lunch at the club instead of the drive back north to East of Highway Restaurant.

Results

Some high scores today were recorded due to the rainy conditions but we did have some good scores in the first few places. Winner of the August Trophy was Mike Smith with a 96 for 40 points – congratulations Mike! Runner up was Jeff Pearce with 93 for 39 points, receiving a bottle of wine kindly donated by Ricardo Castro. 3rd place was Mike Williams with 87 for 38. Best gross of the day was Andrew Cseszko with an 84 ….. although we were about to amend this to 85 for the extra stroke he took with ReinLi’s club to break his car window after locking his car keys in!! Results – Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort – 23rd August 2016

IMG_9592

It has been 10 years or so since Loose Cannons played up at Awana so after an invitation by the new Golf Manager, Russell Maw, to try out the new and improved course we had 3 flights for this weeks game. The drive up the hill to Awana is still tortuous but the cool air and mountain views once you get there are worth it.

We tee’d off at around 8:00am on Index 1 Hole No 1 which claimed a few early victims with OB left and hazard on the right. The course was in very good condition even though it was a little dry and the greens generally very good although some seemed somewhat slower than others. The course is very tight requiring accurate placement of the ball on the drive and approach …. something many of our members are not particularly good at …. so there were some large contributions of balls to the surrounding jungle and water!

Highlight hole for our group was hole no 11 where Mike Smith pulled his ball left and thought it was red stakes … it was not … so he drove all the way back to the tee to play again in an attempt to scrabble a point. He made a 7 so didn’t get a point but was later informed later by the group behind that he had tee’d off the 2nd time from the ladies tee so his score (had he scored) would have been null and void anyway. This didn’t help Mike’s mood as he struggled with his game today on this adventurous course.

The air was cool so it was a pleasant round and the views and some of the hole layouts were spectacular. We all finished by around 12:30 or so. The original plan was to lunch and refresh at the club but after finding out they only had 9 cans of Carlsberg beer (no draft beer available) and these cans of beer were RM20 a pop …. we decided to head back down the hill to a good Chinese restaurant at Gohtong Jaya. Here we had good food and reasonably priced beer at RM20 a large bottle. So this is something the management at Awana Golf Resort should note …. if they plan on this being a “premier” or “exclusive” course then it should have some basic food and refreshment services at a reasonable price. The course is good but not worth their normal asking price of RM300 …. particularly when you consider the rather sub-standard club facilities (changing rooms and F&B services).

Results

Some high scores today, as expected, but the winner today with a gross 100 and 37 points was Andrew Robinson (cut 4). Runner up was Stuart Taylor with the best gross of the day of 89 with 35 points and 3rd place was Ricardo Castro with 91 for 34 points. Full results below:

Results – KGSAAS – 16th August 2016

IMG_9459

5 flights of Loose Cannons teed off from the President and Sultan 9’s at KGSAAS on a hazy but relatively cool morning. Progress was fast as the course was very quiet so all flights were finished by 12 or just after. The course was in good condition as it usually is. Interestingly they seemed to be carrying out quite a bit of tree trimming and felling around the course … the contractor for this obviously had some kind of accident during this as there was a wrecked crane truck on the 4th hole of the Sultan 9 (see photographs below) …. looks like a felled tree branch fell down and wrecked the truck cabin!

George Murray did not finish today as his golf shoe gave out on the 4th hole of the game …. probably being due to being left in the cupboard for the last 2-3 years!

After the game we had lunch at the clubhouse cafe along with jugs of Carlsberg beer which was on special offer …. buy 2 and get one free.

A big thank you to Sigi for sponsoring his flight which left us with a reasonable cash surplus towards lunch.

Results

The winer today was Mahmud Mohamed with a gross 86 and 41 points (cut 5). Mahmud didn’t make lunch to receive his RM50 prize and as per normal procedure the winnings went into the pot and we enjoyed the beer on Mahmud’s behalf! Runner up was Sigi with 88 for 40 points and 3rd place went to Ted Parslow with 85 for 39. Full results below:
