Loose Cannons Xmas Lunch – Coliseum – 9th December 2016

img_1375

Once again we returned to the Coliseum Cafe for our annual Xmas lunch. There were 16 of us in attendance this year and as per the usual procedure we had drinks prior to lunch in the front bar from 12 noon till around 1pm. We then moved to the back restaurant at our usual long table strategically placed behind some screens, no doubt to shield the other diners from our rabble.

Mike Smith made the introductory remarks giving a brief history of the Loose Cannons golf group and then proposed a toast to absent friends, Gordon Wingate and Murray Preston.

Following the explosion of poppers, tooters and spraying of fake snow we commenced lunch. Interspersed with the food and wine we were entertained by numerous jokes, recitals and songs by the members. Much of these we had heard before but it was always entertaining to hear the same old jokes and songs yet again.

16 bottles of wine were demolished during the lunch after the numerous beers in the bar beforehand so all members duly staggered home well fed and watered.

Results – Tasik Puteri – 6th December 2016

img_1359It was a beautiful morning today as 6 full flights tee’d off on the Putera and Tasik nines at Tasik Puteri. The Putera nine was probably in the worst shape we have seen it for a long time … the greens were bad and very slow. The Tasik nine however was good although again some of the greens were suffering a bit. The weather was great and we had no hold ups round the course so we were all finished and then took lunch at the usual Chin Heong Restaurant close to the highway exit ….. well apart from Roger McGowan who had some navigational issues …. thank God he is still not flying!

Lunch was good washed down by quite a few cold beers kindly sponsored by Kevin Wiggins with RM200 who was celebrating a recent birthday and Mike Smith topped up the pot to the sum of RM600 who was also celebrating a birthday with a number larger than most of our birthdays! Cheers boys.

Worth of mention today:

  1. Peter Kenyon managed to hit the ball from the tee and land it behind him by hitting the bridge in front of the tee box
  2. Stuart Taylor pulled of an excellent recovery shot where his ball was right next to the lake on the 18th Par 5 hole by getting in the lake and playing his 2nd shot …. managed to recover with a bogey ….. and a very wet pair of golf shoes … video below:

Results

Scores were not as good as usual at this course qualifying the earlier comment on the course condition, but our clear winner today, Kevin Wiggins, did well with an excellent 90 for 40 points (cut 4). It was so good to see Kevin win having made a come back from a long bout of illness and eventually made it to the winner’s podium again. Runner up was Peter Kenyon with 98 for 36 on count back from Mahmud Mohamed and Mike Williams. Best gross today was Geoff McLaws with an 80. Full results below:

Poll for the Continuation of the Loose Cannons Blog

As you are all aware I have maintaining the Loose Cannons blog for many years now and this is a great wealth of historical data with records of scores, games played and a multitude of photos and videos. I have been using WordPress to host this blog and the free membership which includes a limited storage (3 Gb) is now nearing capacity …. we are up to around 96-97%. So this means we will have no more space to store our blog postings/photos/etc in the next month or so.
I can take out a Premium membership which costs $8.25 a month or $99 a year (circa RM440) which will give us a vastly increased capacity (13Gb) and should last us for as long as we should be worried about.
This poll is to get the group decision on whether to continue the blog at an annual cost of around RM440 or to discontinue the blog. Please vote below with your decision …. this poll will be valid for one week only.

Results – KGSAAS – 29th November 2016

img_1223

The monthly Trophy game for November was held at KGSAAS. On arrival it looked very busy with a very large competition due to tee off at 7:45am but we all got off on two tee boxes on President and Sultan at shortly after 8:00am. Amazingly it was not too slow and after a few slow first few holes the pace was reasonable.

With heavy rain the previous evening the course was very wet and heavy making playing conditions difficult. Many balls were difficult to locate as they plugged on the fairway. The greens however were good.

We all finished by 1pm or shorly therefafter and had lunch on the golfer’s terrace.

It was ReinLi’s 100th game and he kindly donatde RM200 to the drinks pot which we all gladly helped to use up with numerous special rate jugs of beers being consumed. Peter Kenyon also dropped some cash into the pot as he was celebrating a birthday. Many thanks to ReinLi and Peter.

Results

With the poor playing conditions scores were generally lower than normal at thsi course. The winner, Bernard Romahn, however managed a great score of 85 for 44 points. Runner up was Paul Geddes with 86 for 37. best gross of the day was Geoff McLaws with a 78. Full scores below:

Results – Staffield Country Resort- 22nd November 2016

img_1113

We had 7 full flights today at Staffield Country Resort indicating clearly the popularity of this course that always seems in great condition. It’s a bit of a trek … but … hey what the heck else do we have to do all day.

Welcome to our guest today, Alain Desiderato, who joined us for the first time.

We tee’d off from two tee boxes on Western and Southern nines after an easy registration and with hardly anyone lese on the course we had a clear run. The course as usual was in great shape. The greens on the Western nine were fast whereas the greens on the Southern nine were considerably slower and a little bumpy …. looks like they had recently been hollow tined.

Our flight were a bit worried when we reached the first green … and thought someone from the 1st flight had perhaps left their brain behind at the side of the green …..

…… a beautiful “brain-shaped” mushroom.

The weather was good and with a brief threat of rain we all got back to the clubhouse by around 12:30 and had lunch at the club just before the heavens opened.

Results

Some good scores today as expected at this course. The winner with an exceptional gross 75 and 44 points was Andrew Cseszko (cut 8). Runner up was Ricardo Castro with an 84 for 42 points and 3rd place was Vincent Vijayan with 97 for 39. Best gross of the day was Andrew Cseszko with his 75 …. well done! Results – Danau Golf Club – 15th November 2016

img_1020Looking back at the last time we played Danau Golf Club … it was February 2016 … and it was duly noted at that time how tough this course was … how tough the rough was … and how this caused slow play due to players looking for multiple lost balls. It was the same story when we played Danau today. We had 5 flights, all off one 9 to start, unfortunately and it took us 5 hours to complete the round …. with no one in front of our group … so no excuses … it was slow play by our groups. Something we should consider and try to get better at …. even in tough conditions such as Danau.

The weather was good but enduring 5 hours out on the course it gets hotter and hotter and may players were very weary by the time we finished. The fairways were reasonable and the greens ok …. but again the rough was very thick and unforgiving.

We struggled round and 11 of us made lunch at the East of Highway Restaurant where we had a very good lunch as usual and helped immensely with a beer funding contribution of RM200 from Ray Funnell who is shortly celebrating his 70th Birthday. Happy Birthday Ray …. and thanks for the much needed beers.

Results

As usual at this tough course the scores were high. The winner however broke his handicap … Mike Smith with a 95 for 37 points (cut 4). Runner up was Kevin Wiggins with 96 for 33. Mike Williams and Tony Morris shared 3rd spot and best gross went to Geoff McLaws with a 79. Full scores below:

Results – Sungai Long – 8th November 2016

img_0864

It was a beautiful morning with blue skies today as 5 flights tee’d off at Sungai Long Golf & Country Club. As usual the golf management had closed the 2nd tee box till 8:30am otherwise we would have been off a little quicker …. makes no sense whatsoever.

The course conditions were wonderful, with fairways like carpets, well maintained bunkers (not that I really knew as I avoided them all morning!) and beautiful greens that ran true. A very well maintained course and always a joy to play.

We were all finished before 1pm then it was off to Fei Wai restaurant for lunch. Many thanks to the Birthday boys, Ricardo Castro and Geoff McLaws who kindly sponsored the beers.

Results

Our winner this week was Mike Williams with an excellent 82 for 42 points (cut 6) … he didn’t make lunch so his RM50 winnings went into the lunch pot. Runner up was Ricardo Castro with 85 for 40 points. Best gross of the day was Geoff McLaws with an 79. Full results below:

Results – Bukit Jalil – 1st November 2016

img_0695

We had 5 full flights today under the temporary convenorship of Geoff McLaws at Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Resort.

It has to be mentioned that Geoff McLaws is now an official Asian Senior Tour Pro with an official card …. so is now proudly playing off a scratch handicap with our group.

The changing rooms are currently under renovation therefore we were required to use the swimming pool changing rooms which were a long hike to the other side of the club – amazingly all players managed to find it eventually and make their way back to the starting area.

After a slow check in we eventually all got off on Tee Box No 1 as the second nine was being reserved for walkers therefore making it a slow start. Weather conditions were great –  cool and overcast making for pleasant playing conditions.

The course was in pretty good condition although some greens were variable in speed and somewhat bumpy in places.

Pace of play was not too bad so we all got finished by around 1:30pm and then took lunch at our favourite East of Highway Restaurant closeby.

Results

The winner this week was Peter Kenyon with a gross of 96 and 38 points – cut 4. We had 5 players then tie-ing for 2nd place … all with 37 points. Best gross of the day was Geoff McLaws with a 75.

Results – Bukit Kemuning – 25th October 2016

20 LC’s got off to a slightly earlier start at Bukit Kemuning Golf & Country Resort after a very easy registration and with wonderful weather and few hold-ups we were all round in just over 4 hours. The course was in reasonable condition….the only complaint being the slow and bumpy greens, but judging by the scores, this didn’t detract from scoring with 10 of us playing to or better than our h/caps.
Bukit Kemuning has to be the best value courses we play and with Mayflower literally just round the corner, we will use it more frequently in future.

Results

The winner of the October Trophy with an outstanding (slightly fortunate) 86 for 48 points was Iain Wise. Iain you are cut 12 strokes. Runner up was myself (Mike Smith) with 87 for 46 points ahead of Dave Evans 97 for 43. The lowest gross was 81 by Geoff McLaws.

We don’t have a COTD award in Loose Cannons but if we had it would have gone to Erol who, after taking his clubs from his bag at the 14th green announced “Shit. Where’s my putter? I’ve lost my putter!” ……….It was in his hand!!!!!!
Lunch was at The Mayflower where 14 of us enjoyed a meal ordered for 20 while consuming 32 large Tiger’s at the slightly exorbitant price of RM18 making this an expensive but very enjoyable luncheon.
