17 players teed off from two tee boxes, on time, in near perfect weather conditions. The course and especially the greens played slowly after the overnight rain.

The sad news was confirmed that Geoff Parslow will not be with us for a while, as he is back in Oz, after inexplicably falling foul of Immigration, upon his return to KL on Sunday afternoon from Phuket, and being refused entry. Geoff, good luck from us all, and we look forwards to seeing you back on the tee box as soon as possible.

The winner on the day was the in form Bernard Rohman with 86 for 46 points. Cut 10…Second place, ocb from Hans Berger was Stuart Taylor, also with 86 for 43 points. Cut only 1. The first three all had 3 bonus points to add.

Report

This was the annual Xmas game with all LC’s required to adorn some festive hats …. traditionally Santa hats or antlers, but this year we saw some new hat styles being used. It was a merry band of 12 festive Loose Cannons golfers who headed out on an initial drizzly morning over the rolling hills of Bukit Unggul. The course condition was very good, albeit slightly wet in places, the weather remained overcast and cool and with no one to hold up play we made good time round the 18 holes and were back in the clubhouse around midday for lunch and beverages.
Ray Funnel kindly arranged for some additional novelty prizes (2 sleeves of golf balls) for two NTP’s on the par-3 holes number 2 and 14, plus a pleasant surprise gift for the runner up.
The winner was Andre Holm with 89 and 42 points. The runner up was Stuart Taylor with 91 and 41 points who received a rather nice bottle of whisky which he kindly opened up during lunch for any takers. Andre is cut 6 and Stuart cut 5.
Lowest gross was Ted Parslow with 87. Most golf was Dick Staufer with 115 who was welcomed back after a long time away from our LC outings.

Report

Just 11 Cannons mustered at Bukit Unggul in perfect weather for this weeks outing.  The course was in pretty good shape, considering the level of precipitation over the past few days.

Andre Holm ran out clear winner with 90 off the stick for 43 points.

Ray Funnell was runner-up with 98 for 37 points.  Andre is cut 7 and Ray is cut 1. Bernhard’s 88 was the lowest gross – a very odd round as he was out in 50 and back in 38!  And Stuart enjoyed (Editor’s note … no he didn’t!) the most golf….

Full details as follows:

1. Andre Holm – 90/43

2. Ray Funnell – 98/37

3. Bernhard Romahn – 88/36

4. Tony Morris – 94/34

5. Jeff Pearce – 99/33

6. Andrew Robinson – 97/31

7. Allan McNicol – 107/31

8. Erol Akinci – 104/30

9. Rick Brown – 106/30

10. Chee Wah – 108/25

11. Stuart Taylor – 111/23

Luncheon was taken at the club, with some very slow service for some….
Stuart and Rick waiting ages for their grub.

Report

Cannons all.

We haven’t played Bukit Unggul since May, mainly because it was in pretty poor condition back then and the M&M service was very slow. Not a lot has changed in the interval. Granted, the course was generally in better shape than previously( the dead tree at the 18th tee box has been removed at last) but the time it takes them to prepare a simple meal is unbelievable.
There was a rush to get onto the first tee ahead of a large group of Chinese seniors; the orange & white shirt sociaty that we increasingly see on a Tuesday lately, who can be horribly slow, and so the 12 LC’s assembled were directed to the back 9 and with no one ahead we were all round in well under 4 hours. Thanks to Ray for taking care of the registration.
Bukit Unggul Golf & Country Club has so much going for it in terms of location and layout that it is almost a crime that it isn’t better managed and presented. It really wouldn’t take much effort to turn it around. They are doing some work to repair kerbs and drains that have lain in disrepair for years, and some of the buggy turning areas that were so ineptly laid a few years back have been extended, not in matching paving you understand but at least a buggy can be turned around now.  But there are still areas on the fairways and their fringes that are completely bare. This can be repaired so easily with just some turf! Of course, when you see the majority of the ground staff sitting under trees doing FA, only stirring from their stupor when when an opportunity to sell a few balls occurs, there is little that can be achieved on the maintenance front.
What a pity.
In a nut shell, the greens were OK but slow and many had patches of damage that had only been sand filled rather than turf plugged. The fairways were average at best and the bunkers were poorly maintained. Out of 10 I would give it 6 at best. But it’s cheap and fairly close to town.
The weather was excellent and a stiff breeze that arrived about half way through meant that we all walked off the course almost dry.
The winner  was myself with 40 points and the runner-up was Andrew Robinson with 38 points. The lowest gross was 85 by Andrew and the most golf was played by Allan McNicoll with 124. I am cut 4 strokes and Andrew 1 stroke.
All 12 of us took lunch at the club house but as I said earlier, the service from the kitchen is so slow that some of us actually visited the kitchen to find out what was causing the delay. 45 minutes seemed about the norm from the time of order to receiving the dish And we were the only ones in the place. Hello!!! The only good news was the bill which left us with a surplus to go into the kitty.

Bukit Unggul course is located in a very scenic hilly location … if only the course was in better condition.

A new hazard …. a bunker on the green! No the guy who was cutting the greens broke a hydraulic hose on his mower and spewed oil over the green …. this was his repair job!

Vincent looks in vain for his ball which had disappeared into this grotty drain.

Results – Bukit Unggul Golf & Country Club – 30th April 2012

Cannons all,
We played on Monday this week as Tuesday is a public holiday and we returnd to Bukit Unggul as we haven’t played there in a while.
BU is in a great setting but the lack of general maintenance lets the place down. Basically it’s falling to bits. The nice new buggies are welcome and the F&B is OK but the course itself still needs a lot of TLC. The greens were nice.

Only 9 LC’s turned out today, the smallest number since our last game here in January. Is that a coincidence? With wonderful weather and light traffic the leading flight were round in 3 hours……would have been quicker if we hadn’t been held up on the back 9.

The winner was Vincent Vijayan with 37 points and the R/Up was Ray Funnell with 36 points. The lowest gross was 89 by Hans Berger and the most golf played was 114 by Alan Holgate just returned from painting his apartment.
Vincent is cut 4 strokes and Ray 1 stroke.
