A good turnout today with 5 full flights and 20 players. Conditions were good with clear and relatively cool weather. The course was very good and the greens, although slow on the 1st 9 holes, were in great condition. We set out from 2 tee boxes and got finished by 12:30pm. 19 of us out of the 20 (surely a record, and including a surprise attendance by Ray Funnell) had lunch at the Chinese restaurant which was enjoyed by all. Although a bit on the expensive side (mainly due them charging us for small bottles of Tiger beer to fill the jugs …. 48 in total at RM13 a pop!) the Loose Cannons kitty kindly chipped in to offset this and subsequently only cost the punters RM50 a head.
Andrew Robinson turned up with new golf shoes today …. well at least we think they were golf shoes ….. but looked suspiciously like some semi-casual tennis shoes. Anyway we will be carrying out a time lapse photo project over the next year and capturing the gradual degradation of these new shoes as Andrew continues to wear them every week …. with his usual attention to cleaning his golf shoes it probably won’t be long till we see some interesting changes.

Some good scores today which is normal at this course with 6 players playing to handicap or better. The winner was Mike Smith with a excellent 41 points (gross of 89) …. well done Mike. Runner up was Stuart Taylor with 40 points (gross of 82) …. if only I had not 3 putted that last green …. sigh!
Best gross of the day was shared between Geoff Parslow and Geoff McLaws both with 81.

Results – Lembah Beringin – 17th March 2015

Report

16 Cannons registered for this game and unfortunately yet again we had a no-show with no prior notification which meant one player who was on standby didn’t get the opportunity to play. We all understand that sometimes circumstances crop up that you cannot play but PLEASE try to let the Convenor know so he can re-arrange. Unfortunately it is the same people that routinely do this and mess up arrangements for all others.
Lembah Beringin Golf Course is a 70 km trek north but is an extremely reasonable price for an almost reasonable golf course. The course is reasonably good although the greens were rather bumpy and very sandy today. Weather conditions were excellent as 15 Loose Cannons headed off around 8.00am from 2 tee boxes. We were finished in around 4 hours which was good.
The plan was to head to Bukit Beruntung and the Triple Round Restaurant for lunch. I tried calling the restaurant yesterday and on the morning during the round of golf but got no reply. When we arrived at the restaurant we found out why …. the restaurant was half-demolished and in a serious state of renovation. After checking out the nearby Chinese restaurant which was very basic and full we decided to head to Rawang to our usual post Tasik Putri restaurant. Lo and behold on arrival there we found it closed!! Final plan was to head to the Selangor Club Sports Annexe where we though we may also catch up with Andrew Robinson who failed to find the Restaurant Triple Round and was uncontactable by phone. So 7 of us finally lunched at the Annexe and yes we did indeed find Robinson there at the bar!!

Results – Bangi Golf Club – 10th March 2015

Report

We had 20 players today making a full 5 flights. We got off on 2 tee boxes on Putrajaya and Bangi Nines at 8:00am sharp with good weather albeit pretty hot by the end of the 5 hour round (See note below on slow play). The course I’ll say was looking somewhat shabby and the greens were very bald, bumpy and patch making putting a major exercise for many.

After the game 18 of us retired to Restoran East of the Highway for lunch. The food was not as good as usual and the bill seems more expensive …. perhaps a reflection of the hot day and the amount of beer drunk.

Results

1st place today was a tie on 40 points but Robert Mulliss (Gross of 99) got the award as Charles Blanchet (Gross 94) had less then the required 5 games for an official handicap. Tied 3rd place was Iain Wise and Jeff Pearce on 38 points. Best gross of the day was Paul Geddes with an 87. Full results tabulated below:

Reminders

Slow Play

We suffered somewhat today from slow play on the course. Now although this was probably due to slower groups ahead of the LC group it is a timely reminder to all players to try and speed up play so we can have a round somewhat less than 5 hours, giving us the advantage perhaps of a longer lunch at the restaurant. All players complain about slow play but rarely admit that they themselves have slow tendencies. Everyone should be aware of time keeping and 1) be ready at your ball with a club to play the next shot, 2) don’t stand around on the green comparing scores or counting scores holding up the group behind, 3) if you cannot score please pick up, 4) park buggies in an optimum location to minimise the walk to the ball or green ….. these are just some of the things I noticed today so please take note so we all have an efficient round of golf.
Number of Clubs
Also players note that the maximum clubs in your bag is 14. Any clubs over that will incur a 2 penalty stroke on each hole that the extra club or clubs are carried.

Results – Monterez Golf Club – 3rd March 2015

Report
A good turnout today with 6 flights – only one withdrawal – Robert Mulliss had to call off at the last minute due to a break in at his house. We were joined today with two guests – Ford Inglis and Tom Murphy. Registration was a little more complicated as we took advantage of using Maybank credit cards for 3 of the flights to get preferential green fees – many thanks to Mike Smith, Bernhard Rohman and Allan Wright for using their cards. We got off from 2 tee boxes at 8:00am though and were not duly held up and were all finished by 1pm.
Course conditions were generally very good except the greens which had been treated by some white chemical in places and in particular the front 9 greens were covered in the stuff. Weather was good but it did get a little hot ‘n steamy by the back 9.
After the game 18 of us retired to the excellent Choong Foong Restaurant close to Subang airport. Martin Walsh, celebrating an undisclosed birthday, kindly sponsored the drinks – thanks a bunch Martin.
Results
Some good scores today on the relatively short Par 71 course. In 3rd place both with 39 points were Hans Berger and Tom Murphy, second place was Charles Blanchet with 41 points (gross of 92) and the winner was Stuart Taylor with 42 points (gross of 80). Best gross of the day was Andrew Cseszko with 77. Full results below:

Bernhard Romahn – Winner February Trophy Game

Results – Bukit Beruntung – 16th February 2015

Report

This week we decided to head north to Bukit Beruntung which we had not played for many years. It was listed in the Top Premier book at a bargain rate of RM50 but when calling to book I was informed there was a special rate of RM45. Later we found that this did not include insurance which we had to pay separately but still a very economically attractive rate. The club has 2 18 hole courses – we played the better?? East Course and with the Saujana group which had taken over this club some years back we perhaps naively thought it may have improved.
The clubhouse is a very large and ominous looking building which is now in a bad state of disrepair. An outhouse which stored all the grass cutting equipment had recently been in a major fire and was completely burnt out …. insurance job??
There were 13 of us …. again sadly let down by last minute pull outs which created extra costs for a number of 1/2 buggy charges.
We all got off on 2 separate tee boxes at just before 8:00am and the first 9 holes were relatively cool, but got progressively hotter as the morning went on. The course was badly cut up by wild boars and the green surrounds were in pretty bad shape as were the bunkers. You really had to keep on the fairway as there was no relief by slicing or drawing onto other fairways – each hole was individually carved through the palm oil plantations so once of the fairway your ball was well and truly gone.
The greens were very soft and spongy with many bumps and fairly slow – particularly one green which had been left to grow and resembled the texture and nature of my ex-mother-in-law’s thick shag pile Axminster carpet.
However the course was extremely scenic and had some interesting holes as can be seen in the photos below.
We all got round in reasonable time being held up a little by a number of Koreans who were all playing the course. We then headed off and had an excellent lunch at Restoran recommended by Rein Li Tan – who also ordered the food. The Mongolian pork ribs were outstanding and a double portion was quickly ordered
Barry cousins was celebrating his 300th game today – well done Barry – and he kindly sponsored the drinks. Allan McNicoll was having his last Loose Cannons game prior to heading to South Africa so he kindly bought lunch for everyone. Thanks Allan and Barry!

Results – Bukit Kemuning Golf & Country Resort – 10th February 2015

Report

Bukit Kemuning was dry for a change and the weather fine so it was a pleasant morning as 17 Cannons set off from two tee boxes at around 8:00am. Course condition was quite good although the greens on the back 9 were quite sandy on the first few holes and most greens were a little unpredictable and bumpy (still didn’t explain my consistently bad putting form today!). The course plays quite long with the 508m Par 5 16th being in my view one of the most boring holes to play. Most of us made good time around the course and we were back to the clubhouse in 4 hours – the last 4 ball however was around 1 hour behind everyone else.
We lunched at the nearby O&S Restaurant (formerly the old Fu Yuen Restaurant) after the game.
Results
We only had 2 players better than handicap today with the winner Robert Mulliss on 41 points (gross of 99) and runner up was Hans Berger with 37 points and gross of 93. Bets gross of the day was Andrew Cseszko with an 81.

Results – Berjaya Hills – 4th February 2015

Report

It was a very cool and overcast day at Bukit Tinggi making it a very pleasant morning’s golf …. it was almost bordering on the cold side dare I say! 17 players in 5 flights headed out from staggered tee boxes and most made it round by 12:30pm or so. It stayed overcast and cool for the whole morning and in fact during our last few holes we had some drizzly rain.
Welcome to a new player this week – Charles Blanchet introduced by Roger Surieux and also a welcome to Tony’s guest Iain visiting from UK. A big welcome back to Glen returning to Loose Cannons after a lengthy period off convalescing from his appendicitis op.
The course was unfortunately looking somewhat untidy and unkempt and the greens a bit bumpy so is really in need of some attention. They seem to be digging up and clearing many areas next to the course which makes it look unsightly.
After the game we headed back down the hill to Kampong Bukit Tinggi and Restoran 126 for some lunch and beers kindly sponsored by Allan McNicoll who was celebrating his 100th game with Cannons.
Results
The winner today was Stuart Taylor with 39 points (and best gross of 83) with runner up Tony Morris on 38 points (89 gross). Full results below:
