We had 23 Loose Cannons this week at Nilai Springs with a tee time booked on 2 tee-boxes at 8:00am. After a tedious and rather inefficient check in process with volumes of paperwork and receipts that fully explain the deforestation in Malaysia we all headed out to our buggies. With 6 flights we had 3 flights aligned for separate tee boxes on Pines and Island nines. However our Flight No 1 decided to not listen to the instructions given and they tee’d off from the incorrect tee box so being the last on that 9 we decided to move over to the Island 9 to tee off. Reaching there we found our 3 flights backed up and then additional 2 balls trying to squeeze in. When asked these 2 balls said they also had a tee time of 8:00am … the same as us. I took the starter to task on this and asked him to sort this out but in the usual Malaysian fashion he did nothing so I needed up taking him to the front desk and complaining …. still nothing happened. This is so typical of Malaysian organisation and very frustrating for anyone trying to arrange a large group like we have. I will be avoiding this course for future games if this is the treatment we get.
So with my blood pressure somewhere in the region of 220/110 our last group eventually tee’d off on the Island 9 at 8:30 or so.
The course had obviously had a lot of rain recently and was rather wet and soggy but the greens were excellent. We managed good time and were not held up further so finished around 1pm.
Most of us then moved onto Dengkil Seafood Restaurant for an excellent lunch and some much needed beer.

We managed to tee off on time, with excellent weather. The course was in good condition and the greens were, as usual true and reasonably quick, bearing in mind the recent wet weather. We played the Island and Pines 9s.

The scores for Nilai were not as good as expected but Barry Cousins had a good round and was the winner with 101 for 39 points. Cut 4 . In second place on count back from Robert Mulliss was Ted Parslow with 85 for 36 points. Cut 1. Ted achieved a 1 under par back 9 for 26 points….He claimed the lesson he recently had proved worthwhile on his second 9 .!!  Full

scores attached.

Report

4 flights teed off on time, using the Island and Pines courses, in overcast conditions, which remained throughout the morning. Steady drizzle then set in for most of the first 9’s. The course was in good condition, although some drainage improvement work is taking place, which made some of the paths a bit messy, but no effect on the playing surfaces. Greens were true, but the only comments received was that the Island 9 were quicker.

Aftab must have played a lot of golf in California as he came out the winner with 93 for 40 points. Stuart was second with 90 for 38 points. Lowest gross was the returning “ice man” John Laidley with a gross of 83.

18 Players teed off on time from the Mango and Pines 9’s. Unfortunately we had 2 late  withdrawals, as a result of ill health.

Conditions were excellent, with light cloud and a little breeze. The course played well, although some of the greens appeared to still be suffering a little from the recent rains. The scores reflected the good conditions, with only 4 players not breaking the 100.

Andre Holm was the winner who shot an excellent 84 for 48 points. This score did not reflect the full story. He scored 44 points on his last 14 holes, and that included a blow out.!!   A Great round. Sorry Andre cut 12. In second place was Kevin Wiggins with 86 for 43 points. Cut only 1.  Lowest gross was Geoff Mclaws with 79.

Lunch was taken at the club with liberal amounts of jugs.

Cannons

Another good turnout saw 18 players at Nilai Springs.  The weather was most clement, the course in fine condition, if rather soft, and it was very quiet. Lunch was taken at the club – the food has improved in recent times at this club.  And there was not a drop of amber nectar
to be seen…….?

The WINNER with 86 off the stick for 43 points was Kevin Wiggins, with Ted Parslow runner-up with an 81 for 42 points. Kevin is cut 7 and Ted is cut 1.  Ted’s 81 was the lowest gross and Richard’s 125 the most gross.  Full details:

1. Kevin Wiggins – 86/43
2. Ted Parslow – 81/42
3. Dave Riggs – 94/40
4. Vincent Vijayan – 99/44
5. Julian Hodson-Walker – 94/38

Results for Nilai Springs Tuesday 13th March

17 LC’s assembled at Nilai Springs Tuesday having had to cancel the proposed visit to Berjaya Hills as they had closed one nine. We will try there again in a couple of weeks time.
The weather was good for golf but recent heavy rain had left the bunkers hard, rutted and with little sand. The greens were lightly sanded and rather slow for Nilai and because of the wet conditions buggies were restricted to the track but otherwise the course was in reasonable nick. When is this period of heavy rain going to end? This should be the dry season right now.
Again this week we were delayed by some very slow players ahead; Koreans I believe, a couple of 2 BALLS holding up a 4 BALL. The Marshall had to be called when 3 flights were waiting on one tee box. These Koreans are coming to Malaysia increasingly, particularly this time of the year when golf courses in Korea are frozen, and I suppose there’s not much we can do about it other than avoid the courses during the Korean winter that they frequent.
The winner was David Hughes with 43 points and the runner-up Hans Berger with 41 points. The lowest gross was shot jointly by John Laidley and newcomer Geoff McLaws with 82’s. The most golf was played by Ken Oakley with 117.
Welcome to Geoff McLaws and bon voyage Ken Oakley. He’s back to the states later this week.
David is cut 7 strokes (which will bring his handicap back to where it belongs) and Hans 1 stroke.
