Results – Bukit Unggul – 23rd December 2013

Report

We were lucky with the weather again, and the course had dried out and buggies were on course. BU  as as picturesque as ever, but as always falls short in other areas…. Ted and Geoff had the opportunity of talking to May Wong during the lunch….!!
“Falls short in other areas” is polite and does not explain fully the course conditions at Bukit Unggul ….. The course was in appalling condition with large swathes of uncut rough impinging on the fairway, large gouged holes and washouts on the fairways, and the greens as usual were abysmal – bumpy, covered in sand and all the edges rough and sandy. This course is sadly in a large downward spiral with a lack of funds being available for routine standard maintenance – this will have a significant effect of putting off golfers playing there and hence further reducing revenue. Unless a cash injection is made this course will sadly only become worse.
Tony had arranged the lunch, which was good and washed down by wine, kindly donated by Erol, apparently John L had been very generous on wine deliveries , during his stay with Erol…! The club also bought two jugs and a bottle of wine. A good time was had by all. The winner was Tony Morris with 88 for 39 points, cut 4. In second place was Graham Cadman, finally returning to the “rostrum” with 98 for 38 points, cut 1.

Excellent weather and a drying course made for a good morning’s golf enjoyed by all. The greens were in good condition but the President’s 9 were much slower than the Alam Shah 9.  Then followed by a very enjoyable lunch, where we also celebrated Erol’s 250 th game with the LCs, and he very generously paid for the beer. Thank you.

The winner was Bernard Romahn with an excellent round of 80 for 46 points. Cut only 10 lah….Second on count back, from Iain Wise was Tony Morris with 88 for 41 points. Cut 1

Results – Impian Golf Resort – 10th December 2013

Report

We finally had 25 starters with 2 withdrawls. Our venerable leader, Andrew Robinson claiming his illness was nothing to do with yesterday’s lunch and Peter May who was at the hospital with his sick daughter. We welcomed back Geoff Parslow after his “forced sabbatical” in Australia and also welcomed, hopefully a new regular member, Brian Stubbs.

The weather was very good, and the course and bunkers were in good condition. But the greens, were slow, bumpy and the front 9 had been recently tined and treated. Not the usual Impian standard by a long way…. I believe a first for LCs, 7 players scored under 90.

The winner , with his best round for quite a while, was Ray Funnell with 90 for 45 points. Cut a mere 9. Just beating Stuart Taylor with an excellent 84 for 44 points. Cut 1.

It was also noted that this was Alan Holgate’s 200th game today – well done Alan -you can buy us all drinks next week to celebrate!

Revision to Method of Flight Allocation for Loose Cannons

During the Xmas luncheon at Coliseum Cafe it was unanimously decided to re-instigate the (Barry Cousins … patent pending) Numbered Tiles method of allocating flights. Given the numerous complaints and critique of the “randomised” methodology and its execution, it was suggested and agreed the previous simple method of pulling numbered tiles on the morning of play was the preferred method.
So as of 1st January 2014, and in line with the use of official USGA Handicaps for all games, Loose Cannons will re-adopt the Numbered Tiles Method for flight allocation on the morning of play. Barry Cousins has kindly prepared a new set of numbered tiles for this …. thank you Barry.

Loose Cannons Xmas Lunch – Coliseum Cafe – 9th December 2013

15 Loose Cannons turned up for the annual revelry at the Coliseum Cafe to celebrate Xmas. Pre-drinks in the Coliseum Bar were partaken, then we all quickly adjourned to the back dining room, tactfully placed behind some dark screens to continue the festivities. Lunch comprised prawn cocktail, “Desperate Dan” style steak pie with mash potatoes then apple pie and ice cream … all washed down with copious quantities of wine.

Entertainment was provided by each LC member who took turns to recite stories or jokes or songs. Xmas hats, poppers and fake snow was in abundance to add to the festive atmosphere. All in all a predictable but enjoyable event and many thanks to Andrew Robinson for making the necessary arrangements.

Based on the newly instigated USGA handicaps within the society and the effective online system for calculating this Allan McNicoll was proudly presented with a prize for the “Most Improved ” Golfer for  2013. This was based on scores from 1st March 2013 till December – next year we can calculate this on a full year basis and we will have another exciting prize for this most coveted award.

A few photos and video below sadly demonstrate the child-like behaviour by all of the Loose Cannons attendees at the Xmas lunch …..

Results of Poll

The results for the recent poll regarding the use of USGA handicaps are summarised below. The majority of players (81%) have voted for the use of USGA handicaps for ALL games. So starting 1st January 2014 Loose Cannons will be adopting the use of players’ official USGA handicaps for all Loose Cannons games. So no more cuts for the winner and runner up as a win should be reflected in a cut in the handicap via the online USGA system we now use.

Results – Tasik Puteri – 3rd December 2013

Report

5 full flights teed off slightly early from 2 boxes. This has to be some sort of record for Tasik…..!!

We played the Puteri and Tasik 9 s. The long Tasik proved even more challenging than usual, as the rough, after the recent weather had not been cut and several balls were lost, in what should have been short rough…. Jeff actually lost a ball to a rare working mower…!!

Weather conditions were good, with light cloud, a rare dry day….   The course was unsurprisingly wet, but the greens were in their usual great condition and were true and fast. The scores reflected the tough conditions and only 50 % of the players broke the 100…

The winner was Jeff Pearce with 91 for 39 points, cut 4, just beating Stuart Taylor who had 91 for 38 points. Cut 1.
